Mom passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at the age of 93, having led a life full of amazing experiences and accomplishments.

Loving wife, best friend and travel partner to the late Thornley Virene (“T”). Forever remembered by her sons Peter (Linda) and Philip. Much loved Mummu to her grandchildren Taylor and Lindsay.  Special friend to Lori Atkins.  A wonderful caring sister to the late Henry Viita (late Flo) and Irene Waller (late Bruce).  Aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Having immigrated from Finland at the age of 3, Eila never lost her yearning for exploring all parts of the world. Her early life was spent in Northern Ontario at Minto near Wawa before moving at the age of 10 to the Sault to finish school. She then attended the University of Western Ontario to earn a degree and her teacher’s certificate. Once completed, it was off to Europe to immerse herself in their cultures. During that time, she spent 2 years teaching in England. Upon her return to the Sault, she spent over 30 years dedicating her efforts to teaching elementary level students in various schools before retiring at age 56. Mrs. Virene was immensely proud of her many years as a teacher and of the students that passed through her classroom.  She was an extraordinarily passionate teacher distinguished by her commitment to the achievement of her pupils.

Mom had many interests outside of her profession and her family.  She was an avid skier, both downhill and cross country.   She was also fascinated with world affairs, politics and the business world  consuming all forms of information to keep up to date.  The family camp was her "happy" place.  She spent her summers with the family at Point  Aux Pins where she was an avid swimmer, gardener and boating companion with her partner "T".  Blessed with a lifelong group of friends they shared many years of incredible experiences traveling, dining and just spending time together. It was truly a life well lived.

A special thank you to the Sault Area Hospital team in 1B for their wonderful care and compassion during her final days.

A private family service will be held. The family would like to extend an invitation to join them for refreshments and a celebration of a life well lived on Tuesday, April 19 from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm at the Algoma Water Tower Inn Pavilion.

Memorial donations (payable by cheque or online) to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation or ARCH Hospice would be greatly appreciated by the family. Arrangements entrusted to Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. E 705-759-2522). Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.arthurfuneralhome.com for the family.
