MONTREAL — Authorities say a 12-year-old girl has died after a house fire in the city's LaSalle borough.

Montreal police were called by the Montreal fire department at about 9:30 a.m. to a home on Marroni Street.

The fire started in the basement, and that's where firefighters found the unresponsive victim.

She was transported to hospital in critical condition where she later died.

A 10-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman were upstairs in the home at the time and were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

A fire chief says there was no smoke alarm sounding when firefighters arrived at the scene.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, and the Montreal police arson squad is investigating.
