WATERLOO, Ont. — A police officer from Waterloo, Ont., has been charged with assault, months after an incident that sent a man to hospital.
Ontario's police watchdog says on March 5, the on-duty officer had an "interaction" with a man who had earlier been arrested.
The Special Investigations Unit says the man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The agency says that following its investigation, there are reasonable grounds to believe a crime occurred and Waterloo Regional Police Service Sgt. Paul Tranter is facing a charge of assault causing bodily harm.
It says Tranter will appear in court on July 8 in Kitchener, Ont.
The Waterloo Police Service says Trantor had been a member of the force for 20 years and has been suspended with pay.
