SIU probing death of woman at southwestern Ontario police station

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. — Ontario's police watchdog is investigating the death of a 24-year-old woman at a police station in Niagara Falls, Ont.

The Special Investigations Unit says Niagara regional police arrested the woman around 5 p.m. on Wednesday for breaching conditions.

The SIU says police took her to the station and lodged her in a cell.

It says the woman left her cell around 2 p.m. Thursday for a bail hearing by telephone and returned to the cell.

The SIU says shortly before 5 p.m. officers found the woman unresponsive and was pronounced dead after paramedics arrived to try to help.

The SIU is an arms-length investigates reports involving police where there has been a serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
