MONTREAL — Quebec's police watchdog is looking for people who witnessed police shoot a Black man in Montreal last month.
Sheffield Matthews, 41, was shot and killed on Oct. 29 in Montreal's Cote-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grace borough.
The watchdog, called the Bureau des enquetes independantes, said it will set up a command post in the neighbourhood today to receive information about the shooting.
Matthews was shot after he allegedly charged officers while holding a knife, according to the police's version of events.
The watchdog says witnesses can visit the command post or email information to investigators through the agency's website.
Quebec's police watchdog investigate cases in which civilians are seriously hurt or killed during a police intervention or in police custody.
