Ontario Provincial Police say awareness is key as they warn the public of a scam that has been circulating in the East Algoma area.
They say one is a technical support scam where a fraudster claims to offer technical support services.
“For instance, a fraudster may pose as a representative from a phone company, claiming they need to replace your router and update the fibre optic lines in your area,” said OPP in a news release.
OPP say the calls often come from a local number and the scammer gives out a name and employee number to appear legitimate.
“They may tell you that your new router will be delivered the next day,” police explain. “Shortly after, another supposed company representative contacts you, stating that a system cleanup must be performed before the new router can be installed. “
“They might even offer to buy your old router and provide you with a ‘company password.’"
Police say these scammers use confidence tricks to convince victims there are issues with their devices, even when no problems exist.
OPP add there are many other types of scams, but if the public is educated, they are less likely to become victims.
“Don't keep it to yourself -- talk to a friend, family member, neighbour, or the police before sending money to people you don't know,” the OPP said.
If you suspect you’re speaking with a scammer, police recommend hanging up immediately.
Incidents can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
Victims should contact their local police agency.
