MISSISSAUGA FIRST NATION — On Saturday Sept. 9, 2017, shortly before 11:45 a.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a boat that had capsized in the Mississagi River at the Territory of Mississauga First Nation.

Police investigation revealed that two males and a female were fishing in a small boat when it capsized, sending them in the water. A male and female made it to shore.

An OPP officer swam and recovered the second male in the river. John Collins, 76 years of age from Blind River, Ontario, was transported to hospital and was pronounced deceased.

Lifejackets were in the vessel and were not worn at the time of the incident.
