On June 3, 2019, the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Highway Safety Division (T.I.M.E.), the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service (SSMPS) and the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) combined their forces to conduct a commercial motor vehicle initiative throughout the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

The initiative was created to increase visibility of OPP, SSMPS and MTO officers in an effort to change driver and company behaviour through voluntary compliance. Attempt to eliminate motor vehicle collisions where factors involved equipment, cargo securement and alcohol.

During the initiative on June 3, 2019, 13 commercial motor vehicles inspections were conducted with the following results:

  • 11 mandatory alcohol screening tests were conducted
  • Nine Highway Traffic Act charges
  • Five commercial motor vehicle out of service

The OPP, SSMPS and MTO engage in practices that promote awareness and education consistent with traffic safety practices and principles.
