Driver charged with impaired after side-by-side ends up in ditch

MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES, ON)- On June 15, 2020, shortly after 12:30 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Dean Lake Road near Mississagi Bay Road in the Municipality of Huron Shores.

A side-by-side was in a ditch attempting to be pulled out by a pickup truck. Police arrived at the scene a short time later and spoke with the driver of the side by side. Police concluded alcohol had been consumed by the driver.

As a result of the investigation, John McIntosh, age 66 from Stratford, was charged with operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on July 23, 2020.

The Side by Side was impounded for seven days and the drivers' licence was subject to a 90-day administrative drivers licence suspension (ADLS).

This incident marks 15 drivers charged under the criminal impaired driving laws in the East Algoma Detachment (Blind River, Elliot Lake and Thessalon areas).

    •    66 per cent male
    •    26 per cent age 30-39
    •    2 per cent traffic complaints
    •    53 per cent between 3 -11 p.m.
    •    2019 - 14 impaired/refuse incidents (to June 15, 2019)
