Driver charged with impaired after vehicle clocked at 140 km/h in a 90 zone

MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES - On Jan. 29, 2020, members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol duties on Highway 17 near the Town of Thessalon.

Shortly before 10 p.m., police observed a pickup travelling at a rate of speed of over 140 km/hr in a 90 km/hr zone. A traffic stop was initiated. While speaking to the driver the officer determined the driver had consumed alcohol and was not wearing a seatbelt. The driver was arrested and transported to Thessalon OPP detachment where the driver refused to provide a breath sample.

The driver's vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days.

As a result of the investigation, Aaron Booker, 33 years of age from Algoma Mills, Ont., was charged with:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
    •    Failure or refusal to comply with demand, contrary to section 320.15(1) of the CC;
    •    Race a motor vehicle - excessive speed contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA); and with
    •    Driver fail to properly wear seatbelt, contrary to section 106(2) of the HTA.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on March 5, 2020.
