An attempt to stop a vehicle for speeding ultimately led to impaired driving charges against a 31-year-old Sault driver.

On Thursday night, shortly before 11:30 p.m., officers with the Ontario Provincial Police on patrol on Highway 17 in Garden River attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding.

Police say the vehicle did not stop and continued toward Sault Ste. Marie.

At the city limits was another OPP cruiser that successfully stopped the car.

The Batchewana First Nation Police Service also attended the scene to help the OPP with traffic control.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested and taken to the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment for further testing.

As a result, Christopher Cole was charged with:

  • operation while impaired-blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • operation while impaired-alcohol and drugs

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste Marie on July 29 and was issued a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension while also having the vehicle impounded for seven days.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Cole is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
