A suspect who allegedly assaulted his female partner turned himself into police yesterday afternoon.

On the evening of 10 April 2007 a couple got into a verbal exchange at a residence in Heyden. The exchange of words accelerated and the woman was assaulted. It is alleged that the man pushed and slapped the woman and then damaged several doors.

Police were called to the home but the man was not there. Yesterday morning police obtained a warrant for the suspects arrest and late yesterday afternoon he surrendered himself to the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment.

A thirty one year old Sault Ste Marie man will appear in bail court this morning. He is charged with Uttering Threats, Mischief Under $5000.00, two counts of Breach of Probation and two counts of Assault.

The victim did not require medical attention.

(East Algoma) The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police are participating in this Provincial Campaign, which runs from April 16th to April 30th 2007.

As Police officers we understand the importance of using seatbelts everyday and we want to ensure that the motoring public are buckled in safely and arrive alive.
Drivers are responsible for ensuring that passengers under the age of 16 are properly buckled up in a seatbelt, appropriate child car seat or booster seat.

Inspector Ron Faulkner is having his officers be extra diligent in the enforcement of this law and will be getting help from the O.P.P. Northeast Region Traffic Unit to ensure compliance.

AMERICAN SEX OFFENDER LOCATED NEAR SAULT STE MARIE

Batchewana First Nation, Ont.,

Earlier this afternoon the Batchewana First Nation Police took an American man, wanted by a Florida law enforcement agency, into custody.

An unrelated, routine, investigation by members of the Sault Ste Marie OPP Crime Unit resulted in Detectives discovering the identity of the suspect earlier today. A background check on the man indicated that he is wanted for several sex related charges originating from Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office in the State of Florida.

All police and border agencies in and around the Sault Ste Marie area were immediately notified and a description of the mans vehicle was broadcast to all officers on patrol.

At about 3:00 p.m. this afternoon officers with the Batchewana First Nation Police located the man in his vehicle on August Street on the Batchewana First Nation.

Sixty nine year old Vincent JAY was taken into custody without incident. Mr. Jay is wanted by the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s office for the following charges. Sexual Assault and Sexual Battery of a Victim Under Twelve Years of Age and Lewd and Lascivious Behaviour of a Victim between Twelve and Sixteen Years of Age.

After his arrest Mr. Jay indicated that he might be in medical distress. An ambulance was called to the scene and Mr. Jay was escorted to Sault and Area Hospital under police guard.

Authorities from Santa Rosa County have started proceedings to return Mr. Jay to Florida. Mr. Jay is being held in Canada on an arrest warrant issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada

Mr. Jay has no known connections on or to the Batchewana First Nation Territory
