UPDATE – DRIVER CHARGED Highway 69 Collision Sends Three to Hospital (Sudbury) – At 9:10 a.m. this morning, members of the Sudbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 69, at Whipporwill Ave.

Highway 69 Collision Sends Three to Hospital


(Sudbury) – At 9:10 a.m. this morning, members of the Sudbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 69, at Whipporwill Ave., City of Greater Sudbury.

Motorists had completely pulled over and parked on the paved shoulder of the highway, facing southbound, to purchase blueberries when another southbound car struck them from behind. The driver of a southbound motorcycle, following the car, tried to avoid the collision and lost control.

The male driver of the car, from Barrie, was charged with Fail to Drive in Marked Lane.

The two male drivers from each car and the female driving the motorcycle all sustained minor injuries, treated and released from hospital.

As part of the investigation, officers would like to speak to the blueberry vendor who left the scene after the collision. Or, if anyone can assist in identifying this man, please call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. He is described as an older male driving a blue ½ ton pick up truck with a cap.

The highway was down to one lane in each direction of travel while they investigated and until the scene could be cleaned up. The highway re-opened to four lanes at 11:30 a.m.

The investigation is continuing.


SEXUAL ASSAULT CHARGES LAID

(St. Joseph Island, Ontario) On Sunday July 29, 2007 the East Algoma Thessalon OPP received a report of a sexual assault that occurred on St. Joseph Island.

Dr. Paul HERGOTT (56) of Sault Ste. Marie has been charged under the Criminal Code with:

Sexual Assault, Section 271 (X2)
Sexual Exploitation, Section 153 (a) (X2)

The accused is scheduled to appear in Sault Ste. Marie bail court today.

WARRANT EXECUTED

(Thessalon, Ontario) The East Algoma Thessalon OPP have executed a warrant on Lance WALKER (22) of Thessalon, Ontario.

WALKER is facing charges under the Criminal Code of:

Theft under, Section 334(b)
Make Forged Document, Section 367
Drawing Document without Authority, Section 374(b)
Fraud under $5000, Section 380(1)
Breach of Probation Order, Section 733.1(1)

WALKER will appear in bail court today

Local Woman Dies in Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash

A head on collision that occurred on Hwy#17 at Garden River First Nation has taken the life of a local resident. Patricia Rose Baker age 71 of Desbarts Ontario died at the scene of the Hwy#17 crash. A post mortem examination will be conducted in Sault Ste Marie Friday morning. The police are trying to determine why Mrs. Bakers vehicle crossed over into the path of the oncoming tractor trailer.

Suspected Drowning Investigated

Sault Ste Marie OPP are investigating the death of a Macdonald Twp. Man. Arnold Strom age 79 who was pulled from the waters of McCarrell lake at his camp on Cottage rd. in Aberdeen Additional Township, by family and friends. Efforts to revive Mr. Strom were unsuccessful. A post mortem examination will be conducted Friday the 3rd of August to determine how Mr. Strom who had suffered from recent medical problems died.


Speeding Driver found to have been drinking

A Sault Ste Marie OPP officer stopped a speeding motorist on Hwy#17 in Aweres Twp. Early Friday morning at 1235 a.m.. The driver of the vehicle had been drinking and failed a roadside breath test and a subsequent Intoxilizer test. Charged with driving a motor vehicle with more that allowable limit of alcohol is Craig Allen McLean age 27 of Sault Ste Marie Ontario.

OPP Plan Strict Traffic Enforcement for Long Weekend

The OPP across the province will be aggressively enforcing all rules of the road and alcohol driving related offences this long weekend. Please slow down and arrive safe and sound. Speeding does not get you there any faster. RIDE efforts will be conducted across all areas of the Sault Detachment area in efforts to prevent and or apprehend drinking drivers.
