Attempted Traffic Stop Results in Recovery of Stolen Vehicle

A Sault Ste Marie OPP Detachment officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a ford van with 4 youths in it on Hwy#17 in Garden River on the August 30th at 2:30 a.m. The vehicle quickly turned off the highway and pulled into a driveway at Green Sky Drive on the Garden River First Nation. The driver ran off into the bush. Investigations reveal that the van had been stolen from a Dauphine St address in Sault Ste Marie. The owner of the van was not aware of the theft. Charged with Possession of stolen property over $5000, Flight from Police and theft over $5000 contrary to the Criminal Code as well as driving without a license is Michael Rhodes age 18 of Wellington Street in Sault Ste Marie. Mr. Rhodes was held in custody pending a bail hearing on Thursday morning. The other occupants of the vehicle were unaware the van was stolen and have not been charged.
