EARLY MORNING TRAFFIC STOP FINDS EARLY MORNING DRINKER

Heyden, Ont.,

A Searchmont woman faces one drinking and driving charge after being arrested just before 9:00 a.m. this morning.

This morning at about 8:45 a.m. an officer with the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment was traveling north on Hwy 17 in Heyden. He noticed a southbound vehicle traveling at an unusually slow speed and holding up an extensive line of traffic.

The officer turned around and eventually caught up to the vehicle. The officer could detect signs that the driver had been drinking. The driver was returned to the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment where further testing indicated that she was over the legal limit to be driving.

Thirty nine (39) year old Lori Marie SMITH of 14 Hult Road in Searchmont has been charged with Driving While Over the Legal Limit Contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

In accordance with the Automatic Drivers Licence Suspension Program in Ontario, her licence to drive for the next ninety days has been automatically suspended.

Ms. Smith will appear in court on March 19 2007 to answer to the charge.

SNOW MACHINE OFFICERS CONTINUE TO PROVE THE NEED FOR PATROLS

Heyden, Ont.,

OPP officers with the Traffic and Marine Unit as well as S.T.O.P. officers (Snowmobile Trail Officer Patrol) were out on snow machine patrols last night.

Their results once again proved the need for these patrols on the trails. Officers checked 49 sleds and their operators. Six operators were issued tickets for various offences under the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act while 14 other drivers hopefully benefited from warnings.

One person was given a 12 hour drivers licence suspension for having too much to drink and operating a snow machine.

Officers checked one person only to find that he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest by the Sault Ste Marie City Police. Nineteen (19) year old Robert DROLET of 1046 Peoples Road was checked by officers only to find out that the Sault Ste Marie City Police held an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Mr. Droulet was arrested on a Breach of Parole warrant. He was transported to the nearest roadway where a Sault Ste Marie City Police cruiser picked him up.

The OPP Traffic and Marine Unit and our community volunteers that make up the S.T.O.P officer unit will continue to patrol the trails and lakes in our joint effort to keep snow machining in the Algoma area a safe and sober event for everyone.

DOG TAKES A NIP OUT OF PAPER CARRIER

Sault Ste Marie OPP were called to the Trout Lake Road area yesterday morning after a dog attacked a paper carrier.

At about 10:00 a.m. yesterday morning a twenty four year old man was delivering papers to a home in the Fisher Trailer Park. The carrier was putting the paper in the delivery box when a man in the park opened his front door for an unrelated reason. A dog came out of the house and attacked the carrier.

The dog grabbed the carrier by the upper thigh. The victim advised that there was noticeable bruising and discolouring to his leg. The Algoma Health Unit was advised of the situation and is investigating further. Charges are pending against the owner of the dog.
