Sudbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police advise of the following Road Advisory:

Location:  Highway 17 – From Nairn Centre to Regional Road 55 

Brief Description of Event:  Closed due to weather conditions.

Grandparents scam circulating on Manitoulin

Local post office worker prevents fraud

LITTLE CURRENT - On Thursday January 23, 2014 at 3:30 p.m. Manitoulin OPP was advised by an employee of the Little Current Post Office that an elderly woman attended wanting to send a money gram for $3,800 to a foreign country. This raised concern by the post office and police were called.

Upon investigation it was learned that the senior lady received a call advising that her granddaughter had been arrested and was in jail in the Dominican Republic and the money was needed to release her from jail. Police were able to confirm that her granddaughter was fine attending university in Ontario.

Grandparent scams are circulating in Ontario and the Manitoulin Detachment has received three calls in the past week. The OPP is advising the public to be aware of this scam and that if you receive a call such as this to call police before taking any action to confirm it is a scam.

Charges laid in shoplifting incident

Persons caught on video surveillance

MINDEMOYA - On Sunday January 19, 2014 at 11:25 a.m., a male and female attended the Island Foodland Grocery Store in Mindemoya. While in the store they were allegedly captured on video surveillance to remove items from the shelves and place in a shopping bag. They then left the store without paying for the items
Manitoulin OPP was contacted after the subjects left the store. Officers attended the store and were able to identify the individuals from the video.

As a result of this investigation OPP have charged two people, one male and one female, with the following offense:

Charged with theft under $5,000 is Stephen Bebonang, age 36 of M’Chigeeng, Ontario.

Charged with theft under $5,000 is Maxine Paibomsai, age 31 of M’Chigeeng, Ontario.

Both persons were released on a promise to appear with an undertaking with conditions. They are to appear at Gore Bay Provincial Court to answer to the charges.
