Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision Highway 17 At Kantola/Fielding Roads

(Sudbury, Ontario) – Members of the Sudbury detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a two vehicle collision yesterday at 1:20 p.m. on Highway 17 at Kantola and Fielding Road intersection, City of Greater Sudbury.

A northbound pick up truck on Kantola Road crossed Highway 17 and was struck by a westbound mini van, in the westbound lane of Highway 17. The pick up subsequently came to rest on its’ driver’s side.

The female passenger in the truck, Aini Rautiainen, age 81, of Finnwoods Road, Lively, ON, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing her seatbelt. The male driver, Svante Rautiainen, age 84, of the same address, was airlifted to St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Sudbury and remains in critical condition. Both occupants had to be extricated from their vehicle by the Walden Fire Department.

The male driver in the mini van, Armand Seguin, age 77, and his wife, Francoise Seguin, age 72, of Regional Road 55, Lively, ON were also taken to hospital in Sudbury by ambulance. They sustained non-life threatening injuries and were treated and released from hospital.

The highway was closed until 7:00 p.m. while an OPP technical traffic collision investigator attended the scene to assist with the investigation.

Officers are continuing their investigation.

Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision - Walden Ont.

On July 13th at approximately 1:20 P.M. the Sudbury detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police received the report of a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 at Fielding Road in Walden. O.P.P. responded along with Air Ambulance, and Sudbury Fire Department.

Police were forced to close the highway until 7:00 P.M. while the on-scene investigation was conducted. As a result of the preliminary investigation, it was determined that a blue pickup truck was stopped at Kantola Road in Walden, to cross Highway 17 to Fielding Road. The blue pickup crossed in front of a west-bound mini-van and was struck.

Two occupants of the mini-van were treated for non life threatening injuries at St Joseph’s Health Center. The driver of the blue pickup remains in serious condition at St Joseph’s Health Center. The passenger in the pickup truck, Aini RAUTIAINEN, age 81 of Walden, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The police investigation is continuing.

Motor Vehicle Collision In Sudbury

(Sudbury, Ontario) – Members of the Ontario Provincial Police are presently at the scene of a motor vehicle collision that occurred at 6:30 a.m. this morning on the southbound ramp to Highway 69, City of Greater Sudbury.

An eastbound tractor trailer unit on Highway 17 took the ramp for Highway 69 south, failed to negotiate a left hand curve, went through the guard rails, down the embankment coming to rest off Goodview Drive.

The two occupants were taken to St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Sudbury by ambulance with undisclosed injuries.

The tractor trailer was carrying non hazardous materials which spilled on impact. There was a small diesel spill and the Ministry of Environment has been notified and are investigating.

The ramp is open to traffic heading south.

The investigation is continuing and charges are pending.
