BREAK AND ENTER TO GARAGE AT WAWA RESIDENCE (WAWA, ON) – On July 17, 2012 the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Wawa Detachment were advised of a break in to a garage on Queen St in Wawa.

(WAWA, ON) – On July 17, 2012 the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Wawa Detachment were advised of a break in to a garage on Queen St in Wawa. The building had been entered sometime overnight. Items that were taken included various bottles of alcohol. OPP continue to investigate this matter and ask that anyone with any information to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers.

ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING AT ANJIGAMI LAKE

Male Charged

(WAWA, ON) – On July 18, 2012 the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Wawa Detachment were advised that a male had accidentally shot himself at a camp on Anjigami Lake. The male suffered injuries to his forehead and was rushed to Lady Dunn Health Centre were he was treated and released.

OPP have charged 40 year old Dale WHITMELL of Goulais River, Ontario with Careless Use of a Fireman. The accused is scheduled to appear in Wawa Criminal Court on September 17, 2012 to answer to this charge.

OUTBOARD MOTOR STOLEN  

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) – The OPP is currently investigating the theft of an outboard motor on Pearson Drive in Elliot Lake.

Sometime between the evening of July 15, 2012 and the early hours of July 16, 2012 unknown person(s) took 2hp, 4 stroke Honda outboard motor that was fastened to the back of a small boat parked in a private driveway.  The motor is valued at $1,000.00.

Investigation continuing.

ONE CHARGED RE:  50/50 TICKET SALES AT DRAG RACES

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) – The East Algoma OPP investigated a possible theft on July 14, 2012 at the Elliot Lake Airport off Highway 108 in Elliot Lake during the Elliot Lake Drag Races.

July 14th, 2012 at approximately 9:00 p.m. officers received information that someone had been selling 50/50 tickets without a licence. 

The suspect was located and advised to discontinue selling tickets and allegedly turned over 6 tickets that were allegedly sold.  Further investigation revealed that more tickets had been sold.

Charged with Theft Under is Danielle Marie BISSAILLON (23) of Blind River.

The accused is scheduled to appear in Elliot Lake Provincial Court on October 2, 2012.

POLICE ARREST A FEMALE DRIVER AFTER A HIT AND RUN COLISSION WITH A PEDESTRIAN

(MAGNETAWAN TWP) On Tuesday July 17, 2012 at approximately 6:00pm police responded to a hit and run collision at Highway 124 near Highway 520 in the Township of Magnetawan.  The collision involved a red jeep and a pedestrian.

The pedestrian involved in the collision was operating a construction truck, a white GMC Cab-Over tractor and he was responsible for blocking West bound traffic while a second truck was painting lines on the Highway.  A red jeep also west bound decided to pass the line of vehicles stopped behind the road painting truck.  The driver of the GMC tractor positioned his vehicle to stop the jeep and got out of his truck to speak to the driver.  The driver of the jeep continued without stopping and struck the driver of the tractor who was standing in the street.  The pedestrian was transported to Huntsville Hospital and later released.

The driver of the jeep drove away, however the incident was witnessed by an off-duty police officer which assisted police in locating the driver.

Police arrested and charged a female driver, Wanda WAKELIN (46) of Oakville, ON with fail to remain at the scene of an accident and dangerous driving contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.  WAKELIN was released from police custody and is to appear in Sundridge Court on Tuesday September 25, 2012.

FOUND REMAINS – SEMIWITE LAKE NORTH OF ELLIOT LAKE

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) – On July 16, 2012, the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit located and recovered a body in Semiwite Lake at the Mississagi Provincial Park 22 kilometres north of Elliot Lake. 

July 19th, 2012 a post mortem was conducted and identification was located.  Police are awaiting DNA results to confirm the identity.

The OPP would like to thank the public for their assistance in identifying the victim.

BE SUSPICIOUS OF TRAVELLING GROUPS ATTEMPTING TO SELL ITEMS FROM THEIR VEHICLE     

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) – The East Algoma OPP received a call on July 19th, 2012 regarding a suspicious vehicle in the area of Laprairie Crecent in Elliot Lake with occupants attempting to sell jewelry from their vehicle.  Police attended the area and could not locate the vehicle.  Patrols were conducted and the suspicious vehicle a grey van was located in the downtown area.  The driver was spoken to and advised that he requires a license to conduct business in the Elliot Lake area.  Further investigation revealed that the jewelry being sold was not gold. 

A caution to businesses and the public regarding traveling groups selling items out of their vehicle.  Always request to see a license which will be issued by the City of Elliot Lake.

Police in the North East area have received information regarding groups of people involved in distraction thefts from retailers. The suspects will enter a store and keep the clerk busy while another suspect speaks with an employee. During this time, while the employee is distracted, items will be removed without the staff’s knowledge.  These groups have also been seen in parking lots and along highways attempting to sell what they claim is real gold jewelry from their vehicles. A complaint of the suspect groups has been received from communities along Highway 17 between North Bay and Sault Ste Marie.
