MANITOULIN OPP INVESTIGATE MISCHIEF TO NURMOUROUS MAILBOXES

Over 40 Mailboxes Smashed Across Island

(Manitoulin, ON)-  On Thursday June 28th 2012 at 8:49 am Manitoulin OPP received a call from a citizen who resided along Hwy 540 in Billings Township advising that his mailbox had been damaged over night and was smashed lying in the ditch and the post was knocked over. While investigating this incident the officer observed adjacent mailboxes damaged also.

At the same time calls were being received at the OPP communications centre advising of other mailboxes being damaged and destroyed. As a result of all the information received it appears that over 40 mailboxes were damaged and destroyed sometime over the evening and early morning hours of June 28 2012. It appears that a culprit(s) responsible drove in a vehicle while another used a long object striking the mailboxes. The boxes were located along the Highway 540 corridor from the M’Chigeeng First Nation all the way to Evansville, Ontario being around 50 kilometres of highway. It is estimated the damage is in excess of over $2000. The investigation is continuing

The police are appealing to the public that if they know anything about these crimes to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime stoppers at 1-888-222-TIPS (8477). You can remain anonymous and if the information leads to the arrest and conviction of person(s) responsible the caller can receive a cash reward.

2012 “ Play Safe” Bike Program

Once again, Algoma Power Inc. will partner with the Sault Ste Marie Police Service, the Ontario Provincial Police, the Anishinabek and Batchewana Police Service, Lock City Dairies, Timberland General Store, Canadian Tire  and Algoma Office Equipment to encourage children to play safely.

Through this program, youth are encouraged to develop positive safety habits by wearing the proper protective equipment while enjoying outdoor activities such as riding their bicycles, roller blading, and skate boarding and general outdoor activities.

The officers are currently on the lookout for children who are playing safely and are obeying all the safety rules. Whether kids are bicycling, skateboarding, rollerblading, swimming or playing in the play ground and doing all the right things, officers patrolling their service area may stop and present a certificate, printed courtesy of Algoma Office Equipment, to reward the child for playing safely.

A coupon is presented by the officer that is redeemable at Lock City Dairies on McNabb St. or Timberland General Store for an ice cream treat and a ballot can also be entered into a draw for a chance to win one of ten bicycles donated by Algoma Power Inc.  The Canadian Tire Store will donate a helmet for each bicycle won.

The winners of the bicycles are then presented with the bike in an assembly at their school.

The Play Safe program wants you to have a happy and safe summer!
