Charges Laid in Fatal Collision From 03 May 2007 (Blind River, Ont.) Investigators from East Algoma O.P.P. have laid charges against 67-year-old Midland resident Lothar KORFF. Korff was traveling from Midland westbound on Hwy.
Charges Laid in Fatal Collision From 03 May 2007

(Blind River, Ont.) Investigators from East Algoma O.P.P. have laid charges against 67-year-old Midland resident Lothar KORFF.

Korff was traveling from Midland westbound on Hwy. 17 when the mini van he was driving crossed the centre line and collided with another eastbound mini van driven by 42 year-old Christine Vandermeer of Blind River.

Vandermeer died as a result of her injuries sustained in the collision.

KORFF was charged with; fail to drive in marked lane, section 154(10(a) of the Highway Traffic Act.


SEARCH WARRANT EXECUTED AT A RESIDENCE ON HILLSIDE DR. NORTH

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) On the 10th of May 2007 the OPP Joint Forces Drug Unit which consists of members from the OPP Drug Enforcement Section, OPP North East Region, Sault Ste Marie Police Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with assistance from the East Algoma OPP, executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act Search Warrant at a residence on Hillside Drive North.

Resulting from the search 360 grams of Cannabis Marihuana valued at $7,200.00 was seized. In addition police seized Drug Paraphernalia, a prohibited weapon (flick knife) and a quantity of Percocet Pills.

Charged with the following offences is:

Joseph NEWTON (47) of Elliot Lake

• Possession of a Controlled Substance (Marihuana) for the purpose of Trafficking
• Possession of a Controlled Substance (Marihuana)
• Possession of a Controlled Substance (Percocets)
• Possession of a Prohibited Weapon (Flick Knife)

Also charged is:

Sharon LESLIE (55) of Elliot Lake with the following:

• Possession of a Controlled Substance (Marihuana) for the purpose of Trafficking
• Possession of a Controlled Substance (Marihuana)
• Possession of a Controlled Substance (Percocets)

NEWTON and LESLIE are scheduled to appear in court on July 3rd, 2007.


DRUG CHARGES LAID

(Highway 17, Thessalon Township) On Tuesday May 8, 2007 members of the East Algoma – Thessalon OPP stopped a motor vehicle on Highway 17
in the Township of Thessalon.

George OSTAPENKO (19) of Calgary, Alberta has been charged with:

1. Possession of Cannabis Marihuana – under 30 grams under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and
2. Failure to comply with sentence or disposition under the Youth Criminal Justice Act

Andriy V. PLYUSNIN (20) of Calgary Alberta has been charged with:

1. Possession of Cannabis Marihuana – under 30 grams under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and
2. Fail to Comply with Undertaking or Recognizance (X3) under the Criminal Code of Canada

Both are scheduled to appear in Bail Court in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on Monday May 14, 2007.

(St. Joseph Island, Ontario) The St. Joseph Island Community Policing Committee in conjunction with the East Algoma OPP have teamed up to assist you in protecting your property against theft.

The four Township offices on St. Joseph Island are all in possession of engraving pens that were purchased by the St. Joseph Island Community Policing Committee. The engraving pens can be used to protect your personal property in your home, vehicle and business. Items such as computer equipment, TV’s, VCR’s, stereos, cameras, game machines, video equipment, cell phones, printers, fax machines, hand tools should be engraved.

There are three steps to security:

1. Contact your local Municipal Office to reserve the engraving pen.
2. Write your vehicle licence plate number or your drivers licence number on all your portable valuables.
3. Return the engraver when you’re finished for the next person to use.

It is a great way to have your personal property permanently linked to you.

HEYDEN LAKE BREAK AND ENTER

Heyden, Ont.,

Sault Ste Marie OPP were called to a seasonal home on Heyden Lake in Heyden yesterday for a break and enter.

Sometime over the past 48 hours thieves entered the home and stole a quantity of alcohol. There was minimal damage to the house and so far it appears that the thieves only took the booze and left the area.

Homeowners in the Heyden and Hwy 552 East in Goulais River have been experiencing an increase in acts of vandalism, thefts and break and enters. If you live in that area or are a regular traveler in that area then you are familiar with who should or shouldn’t be in seen near your home and in your neighbourhood. If you see anyone who you think isn’t from your neighbourhood or you see anyone acting suspicious, call the police right away.
