(Kirkland Lake, ON) - The Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police assisted the Ministry of Natural Resources with three different fires May 24, 2012.

Police were called to fires near Hough Lake and another at Boston Creek/Round Lake at approximately 2:00 p.m.  Highway 11 was temporarily closed at Englehart and at Highway 66.  Highway 112 was also temporarily closed.  A number of homes in the area were evacuated as the MNR attacked the fire.  The fire was brought under control and the highway re-opened at approximately 5:45 p.m.

A fire along Highway 65 between Elk Lake and Matachewan at approximately 6:00 p.m. resulted in the evacuation of a tourist camp.  The highway remains open but there is smoke in the area.

The area continues to be under an Extreme Fire Hazard.  No open burning is allowed including for cooking or warmth.  The fire ban has been in effect since May 15, 2012.

On May 25, 2012 a male person from Kearns was charged with “Tend to Fire” in Restricted Fire Zone after police received complaints of campers in the Crosby Lake area with a bonfire.

OPP Investigating Two Men Asking for Support for Forest Fires

(Temiskaming Shores, ON) - Two men dressed in army camouflage and black security hats approached a Haileybury man for ‘support’ for on-going forest fires May 24, 2012.

The Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police was called to the Rorke Avenue address to investigate.  The men did not make direct requests for cash but the complainant advised that he was concerned that the men would be approaching seniors for cash.

There are no fund-raising efforts being undertaken in relation to the current fire situation.  If you are approached by people looking for ‘support’ for the fires call 1-888-310-1122.  Also, take note of any vehicles including the licence plate numbers, used by the people asking for support.

BREAK AND ENTER TO RESIDENCE IN BRUCE MINES

(Bruce Mines, ON) –On May 22, 2012 East Algoma Thessalon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were advised of a break and enter which had occurred between May 17, 2012 and May 22, 2012.  A residence on Bennett St, in Bruce Mines, ON was entered and once inside suspect(s) stole 2 flat screen televisions and 3 firearms.
