STOP SIGN, SPEED LIMIT SIGNS STOLEN

(MacDonald-Meredith-Aberdeen Township, ON)On November 18, 2012 five speed limit signs were erected in MacDonald Township.  They had bags placed over them, due to the fact they would become enforceable starting on January 1, 2013.  A pre-existing stop sign had also been changed to a new one at the intersection of Iron River Road and Birch Lake Road.

On November 26, 2012, an employee from the Township of Echo Bay observed that all new speed limit signs and posts had been removed from their locations. The stop sign and post had also been stolen.

Sault Ste. Marie OPP is investigating.

OPP advise that this type of theft impacts the entire community and affects public safety.  Had a collision occurred where the stop sign was removed, offender(s) would be looking at criminal as well as civil liability.

The replacement of these signs is the responsibility of the Township.  Therefore, the cost for replacing these signs will have to come out of the Township budget which ultimately will affect individual members of the community.

The replacement cost is projected to be several thousand dollars.
