UPDATE #2: Aug. 12
A 65-year-old from Elliot Lake was killed in a head-on collision on Highway 17 yesterday afternoon.
The OPP says the Sunday crash occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m., when a westbound vehicle collided head-on with an eastbound vehicle in Nairn-Hyman Township.
The 65-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, police say, while three others were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Manitoulin OPP, Manitoulin-Sudbury Paramedic Services, ORNGE and the Nairn-Hyman Fire Department responded to the collision.
The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (T.I.M.E.) team.
UPDATE #1: Aug. 11
A closure of Highway 17 in both directions near Sudbury has now been cleared.
The highway was closed near Nairn Centre for most of the afternoon, following a closure notice due to a collision at around 12:50 p.m.
Notice of the road reopening was sent out at around 7:50 p.m.
SooToday readers said motorists were able to detour around the problem area during the shutdown and get back on the highway.
EARLIER REPORT:
A collision has closed Highway 17 in both directions near Sudbury this afternoon, according to Ontario511.
The traffic info service was reporting the highway closed between Old Nairn Road and Macdonald Street in Nairn Centre, just west of Sudbury as of around 12:50 p.m.
There was no indication from the OPP or Ontario 511 whether or not a detour was available in the area or when the road might reopen.
However a SooToday reader says there is a detour to get around the closure and back onto Highway 17.
SooToday will provide an update when more information becomes available.
