An ATV operator who allegedly threatened police the day after crashing into a cruiser is facing several charges.
Ontario Provincial Police say they were heading to a residence on Sand Bay Road in Goulais River at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday for a different matter when officers spotted two people on an ATV not wearing helmets.
They allege the driver was holding a bottle of liquor.
“The operator attempted to evade police by approaching the parked cruiser, then quickly accelerating past,” said OPP in a news release.
“While doing so, the ATV struck the cruiser's front bumper in attempting to make a right-hand turn, thus causing loss of control and flipping into the ditch.”
At the time, Orlando Nahwegahbow, a 25-years-old from Batchewana First Nation, was charged with:
- Operation while impaired - alcohol
- Failure or refusal to comply with demand
- Dangerous operation
- Failure to stop after accident
- Fail to stop for police
- Driver-no helmet or improper helmet
- Litter highway
The next day, at around 1 p.m. on Sunday, police say a call came into the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment about a property issue.
“While on the phone with the call taker, the accused threatened to attend the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment with a firearm to shoot all the officers there as well as the call taker,” the OPP said in a news release.
Nahwegahbow was arrested again later that day during a traffic stop on Bay Street and further charged with three counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.
None of the allegations have been tested in court and Nahwegahbow is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
