Police seize 131 pounds of marijuana

(MASSEY, ON) – On August 25, 2012, members of the OPP Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, Sudbury Drug Enforcement Unit and the Sarnia Police Service conducted a vehicle stop in the Town of Massey that led to the seizure of 131 pounds of marihuana.

Investigation revealed that two individuals were returning to Sarnia from British Columbia with a large quantity of marihuana. 

The vehicle was located in the Town of Massey and as a result two individuals were arrested and a search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of 131 pounds of marihuana along with $12,635 cash. 

Ronald Fraser and William Gonyou were remanded into custody pending a bail hearing on August 27, 2012.

The street value of the drugs seized is $ 1,198,220.

Charged are:

Ronald Fraser, age 44, of Sarnia 
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purposes of Trafficking
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
William Gonyou, age 42, of Sarnia
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purposes of Trafficking
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime

FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT

(Tilley Twp,ON ) –  On the 26Aug12 at 3:20 pm Sault Ste. Marie OPP were called to investigate a single motor vehicle fatality involving a motorcycle. OPP were assisted by the Batchewana Fire and Rescue.

The collision occurred 4 kilometres north of Chippewa Falls on Highway 17 north, and the Hwy was closed for a short period of time.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the lone operator of the motorcycle was southbound on Hwy #17. The motorcycle drifted off the roadway into the southbound shoulder striking a section of guardrails along the Hwy. The operator was thrown from the motorcycle and died as a result of his injuries.

Alcohol, speed and weather are not considered to be factors in this accident.

The male driver is identified as DONALD AHONEN (65 yrs) of Sault Ste Marie.  

OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators attended the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

Large quantity of firearms, ammunition and gun powder seized from a residence in Elliot Lake          

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) – On Wednesday, August 22, 2012 members of the OPP North East Region Crime Unit, Explosive Deposal Unit, Sault Ste Marie Identification Unit, Provincial Weapons Enforcement Unit, Organized Crime Unit and members of the East Algoma OPP executed a criminal code search warrant.  The warrant was for a residence located in the Westhill Trailer Park of Elliot Lake for unsafe storage of firearms.  

As a result of that search police located and seized an excess of 140 firearms of various calibers, a very large quantity of ammunition and gun powders that were found to be stored in an unsafe manner.

Charged with the following is Kenneth ASHWORTH (65) of Elliot Lake.

  • Unlawful possession of explosives
  • Careless storage of ammunition
  • Careless storage of a firearm
  • Breach of Firearms Regulations

The accused is scheduled to appear in Elliot Lake court on November 6, 2012.
