JACK KNIFED TRUCK CLOSES HWY 17 NORTH

Sault Ste Marie OPP closed Hwy 17 just north of the Canadian Carver and Agawa Crafts after a truck blocked the entire roadway.

Of Friday at about 3:30 p.m. the truck was traveling northbound on Hwy 17 when the driver lost control of the rig during a snow storm. The truck and trailer ended up sideways across the highway with the cab off into the ditch.

The highway remained blocked until a tow truck was able to attend the scene and clear the rig off the roadway. No one was injured in this crash.

ANOTHER ONE INTO THE DITCH

Sault Ste Marie OPP were called to Hwy 17 in Laird Twp near Lake George Road on Sunday for another transport in the ditch.

On Sunday morning at about 12:30 a.m. the transport was traveling westbound when the driver allegedly lost control of the rig and ended up in the ditch between the two lanes of the highway.

The driver was not injured and the transport was left there until daylight when it was removed. No one was injured in this crash.

R.I.D.E. = RESULTS

Members of the OPP Traffic and Marine Unit, the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment, Garden River Anishinabek Police and the Rankin First Nation Police conducted joint and separate R.I.D.E. checks all weekend.

A total of 505 vehicles were checked at 14 different R.I.D.E checks from Batchawana over to the Ranger Lake Road and east to Echo Bay and Laird Twp.

One person was charged with a drinking and driving offence, three 12-hour drivers licence suspensions were issued, two people were charged with having open liquor in their vehicle and two people were given seat belt tickets

On Friday night at about 10: 30 p.m. officers with the Traffic and Marine Unit were conducting a R.I.D.E check on Pineshores Road in Goulais River. As a result of this R.I.D.E check the driver of one vehicle was give a roadside test and he failed the test. He was returned to the detachment were an Intoxilyzer test indicated that he was over the legal limit

Thirty five year old Kevin Marc ROBIDOUX of Olar Side Road, in Goulais River, has been charged with Driving While Over the Legal Limit. He was also charged with having open liquor in his truck. As with every alleged impaired driver in Ontario, Mr. Robidoux was issued a 90 day drivers licence suspension.

On Sunday afternoon officers were conducting R.I.D.E. checks at the intersection of Hwy 556 and Ranger Lake Road. When the officers checked one vehicle they discover that the driver and passenger were not wearing their seat belts. A closer examination revealed that the truck had no buckles for the seat belts. It was determined that some repairs were previously made to the vehicle and the owner removed the buckles during the repairs. The seat belt buckles were not put back in the truck at the completion of the repair.

Twenty one year old Adam ZUCCATO, of Sault Ste Marie was charged under the seat belt section of the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.


FAIL TO REMAIN INVESTIGATION

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) Saturday the 2nd of December 2006 police were called to attend a restaurant on Mississauga Avenue regarding a pick up truck going off the roadway and hitting a fire hydrant. On scene police learned that the vehicle was not longer at the scene and a short time later police located the driver and the following charges were laid.

Charged with Impaired Operation and Over 80 is Mitchell Thomas Ross GAUVREAU (26) of Elliot Lake. GAUVREAU is scheduled to appear in court on January 2, 2007. GAUVREAU was also charged with Failing to Remain at the scene of an accident, for which he is scheduled to appear in court on January 17, 2007.
