HIGHWAY 17 DISAPPEARS—AGAIN

Sault Ste Marie OPP were called to the Mile Hill on Hwy 17 in Heyden yesterday afternoon after high winds made the highway disappear.

Yesterday afternoon at about 4:00 p.m. OPP received several calls about poor weather conditions in Heyden and Goulais River. Regular travelers on the Mile Hill and Hwy 17 through Goulais River reported white outs and zero visibility for extended periods of time. At the same time four transports lost traction and were stuck as they attempted to climb the Mile Hill that separates Heyden and Goulais River.

Highway maintenance crews arrived with plows and sand trucks and were able to free the trucks from the hill.

TWO WILDLIFE CRASHES
Bachawana, Ont.,

Sault Ste Marie OPP were sent to two crashes involving wildlife over the weekend.

On Saturday night a person was traveling south on Hwy 17 in the Batchawna area when they struck a wolf that was on the roadway. Last night a northbound transport struck a moose. No one was injured in these two crashes and both vehicles were driven away from the scene.


Rings and Camera Taken During Break and Enter

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) Officers of the East Algoma OPP are currently investigating a Break and Enter at a residence on Blackwell Road in Elliot Lake.

The victim reports that sometime between February 3, 2007 at approximately 5:00 p.m. and February 4, 2007 at approximately 1:00 p.m. unknown person(s) entered the residence through an unlocked back door and stole items from the residence.

Items taken were a digital camera value $640.00 and 3 diamond rings approximate value of over $8,000.00.

OPP AND MTO JOIN FORCES IN TRAFFIC INITIATIVE

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) The East Algoma OPP in conjunction with the MTO is making their presence known through out the north shore area. “Unsafe commercial vehicles, speeding, aggressive driving, impaired drivers, non use of seatbelts, child safety restraints, snowmobile patrols and traffic enforcement are the focus of this proactive initiative,” states S/Sgt Dean Ward of the East Algoma OPP.

Drivers can expect to be stopped and charged for speeds that exceed the legal limit said Ward. “Ontario Provincial Police officers are committed to enforcement efforts that deter drivers who show disregard for the safety of others by driving in an unsafe – inattentive manner” sates Ward.

During the first four (4) days of the initiative, officers have laid the following charges:
13 - speeding
2 - no insurance
1 - non-compliant seatbelt use
1 - Careless Driving
2 - Documentation Charges re: Commercial Vehicles
1 - No trail permit – snowmobile
1 - Fail to produce proof of Insurance

“We just want people to arrive to their destination safely,” adds S/Sgt Ward.
