(SUPERIOR EAST OPP) – Ontario Provincial Police continue to urge snowmobilers to ride with caution and use common sense with a Trail Safe 2010 enforcement weekend. The OPP is leading the region-wide safe trail initiative, supported by the S.T.O.P special constables, OFSC, MNR as well as many Municipal and First Nation Police Services. The initiative is intended to improve snowmobile safety for all snow mobile trail users through strict enforcement and education.

Our members will be out in full force throughout our patrol area on the weekend of January 30 and 31, 2010. In 2009 Superior East OPP investigated two fatal snowmobile related incidents in this area.

Please put safety first by riding with care and control. Check local conditions and ride the trails that are officially open. Above all, avoid taking unnecessary risks.

MALE CHARGED WITH IMPAIRED

(Hornepayne, On) – On January 22, 2010 at approximately 2:45am Superior East OPP in Hornepayne observed a vehicle operating in an erratic manner on Front Street. Officers stopped a grey Chevrolet Sonoma being operated by a male subject. Subsequent investigation resulted in Shane Alexander MITCHELL age 31 years of TORONTO, Ontario being charged with the following Criminal Code charges;
(1) Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle;
(2) Exceed 80 milligrams of Alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.
He will appear in Hornepayne Criminal Court at a later date to answer to the charges.

VEHICLE STOP LEADS TO DRUG CHARGES

(White River, On) – On January 22, 2010 at 4:50 pm Superior East OPP in White River had occasion to check a northbound motor vehicle on Highway 17 at White River. There were two female occupants in the vehicle. As a result of investigation by the officers, a quantity of what appeared to be Marihuana as well as cocaine was located. Stephanie DESMOULIN, age 32 of PIC MOBERT, Ontario stands charged with the following Controlled Drugs and Substance Act offences;
(1) Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking (x2)
Jennifer DESMOULIN, age 27 of PIC MOBERT, Ontario stands charged with the following Controlled Drugs and Substance Act offences;
(1) Possession of a Controlled Substance for the purpose of Trafficking (x3).
Both subjects will appear in Criminal Court at a later date in Wawa.

THEFTS FROM UNLOCKED VEHICLES

(Chapleau, On) – Superior East OPP in Chapleau have received three separate complaints of person(s) unknown stealing mobile radios and microphones from unlocked tractor trailer units. These radios are valued at approximately $1300.00 each.
The OPP remind people to ensure their vehicles are locked when unattended and if possible remove all valuable articles from the vehicles or place articles where they cannot be readily seen.
