OPP Investigate Fatal Snowmobile Collision

(Wawa, Ontario): On Sunday the 4th of January/2009 at approximately 10:00 pm The Superior East OPP responded to a single snowmobile collision located on the Old A.C.R rail bed in the Lendrum Township within the Michipicoten First Nation Territory. Preliminary investigation indicates that the snowmachine and its riders plunged down an embankment where one of the riders sustained fatal injuries. The OPP are currently continuing with the investigation.

The name of the deceased is being withheld pending family notifications.

FOUR MOTOR VEHCILE COLLISIONS REPORTED OVER THE WEEKEND

(Sault Ste. Marie) – The Sault Ste. Marie detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police investigated four motor vehicle collision over the weekend, three north of the City and one East of the City. There were no injuries reported.

On Saturday, the 3rd January at 08:15 a.m. OPP responded to a fail to remain collision in the parking lot of the Northwinds Mini Mall in Vankoughnet Township.

A Mini Van parked in the parking lot was side swiped on the driver’s side by an unknown tractor trailer unit.

At 2:30 pm OPP were called to a 2 vehicle traffic collision at the intersection of Olsen Drive and Rupert Acres Drive in Aweres Township.

Charged with Failing to Share Roadway under the Highway Traffic Act is 23 year old Bud Irving of 197 Groth Road, Goulais River, Ont.

On Sunday, the 4th January, at 01:30 a.m. OPP responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Old Highway 17 Road in Fenwick Township.

A blue Ford Areostar van entered the ditch received minor damage and had to be towed.

At 8:45 p.m. a single motor vehicle collision was reported on Highway 17 East in Macdonald Township. The vehicle had to be towed.

The OPP would again like to remind motorists that the weather is always one of the variables that dictate how we should drive. Plows can only do so much during storms. People who drive need to be responsible and take into account these variables. You cannot drive under adverse conditions with disregard for the weather and current road conditions.

2) Plan extra time to get to your destination and consider delaying your trip in bad weather.
3) Notify a friend or family member of your destination and anticipated arrival time.
4) Always exercise caution and drive according to conditions.
5) Watch for flashing lights of snow and ice control vehicles.
When approaching them from behind, slow down, stay back and be patient. DO NOT PASS around or between them.

Assault with a Weapon/ Weapons Dangerous

On Sunday 4th January 2009 members of the Wikwemikong Police Service were called to a residence in the main village area of Wikwemikong, Ontario to investigate a male youth for an assault and threatening incident.

Upon the Officer’s arrival, the male youth immediately became aggressive and threatening towards the Officers with a variety of weapons including an ice pick and a large hunting knife.

The male youth refused to cooperate and remained barricaded within the residence.

The Officers maintained observation of the residence and the male youth while obtaining assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police and their specialty units.

The male youth eventually exited the residence and turned himself over to the police officers on the scene where he was taken into custody without incident.

The male youth has been charged with Assault with a Weapon, Uttering Threats (3 counts), Weapons Dangerous (2 counts), Mischief under $5000 contrary to the Criminal Code and Breach of Probation (3 counts) contray to the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The male youth is being held in custody and is awaiting a bail court hearing on Monday 5th January 2009 in Ontario Court of Justice – Bail Court Division at 10:00 am. The youth cannot be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The investigation is continuing.
