R.I.D.E. CHECKS FINDING LOTS OF OTHER INFRACTIONS

(Goulais River, Ont.) Sault Ste Marie OPP are continuing to find other infractions at our ongoing R.I.D.E checks.

Over the weekend officers conducted six R.I.D.E. checks at different locations throughout our detachment area. A total of 108 vehicles were checked. Four drivers were given roadside breath tests and all four passed the roadside test.

On Friday afternoon at about 3:00 p.m. officers were conducting a spot check at the intersection of Hwy 552 West and Goulais Mission Road. The officers checked the operator of a snow machine only to find several problems with the driver and the machine.

The investigation revealed that the machine had not been registered since 1994, it was not insured and the driver has had his licence suspended.

Twenty two year old Ryan LABERGE of Goulais Avenue in Sault Ste Marie was charged with three offences all under the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act. Mr. Laberge was charged with Driving While Under Suspension, Driving With No Insurance and Driving With No Licence.

In other R.I.D.E checks throughout the weekend two other drivers were charged with Highway Traffic Act offences and two drivers were charged for not being able to produce valid insurance certificates.

Assault at Taxi Stand

(Blind River, Ont.) On Saturday morning 05 January 2008 a person is alleged to have assaulted a cab driver on Woodward Ave. In Blind River.

At approx 1115 a.m. on Saturday morning a person who is reported to have been under the influence of alcohol got into and argument with a Blind River Cab driver. The person verbally challenged the cabbie and it is reported that he spat and then punched the cabbie in the face.

Police arrived a short time later an effected and arrest.

Charged with Assault is: 43-year-old Norman “Buddy” MORNINGSTAR of Blind River, Ontario. Morningstar is to appear in court on 31 January in Blind River.

CITIZEN COMPLAINT NETS SEVERAL CHARGES FOR A LOCAL MALE

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) December 24th, 2007 at approximately 7:16 p.m. police responded to a complaint and while investigating the incident, noticed a male youth walking down Mississauga Avenue in Elliot Lake dragging a Canada Post mailbox.

Through investigation, police charged the male.

Charged with the following is Brett Christian BURKE (19) of Elliot Lake.

Mischief Under
Obstruct Police

BURKE is scheduled to appear in court February 5th, 2008.

YET ANOTHER SNOWMOBILE LICENCE COURSE… WHEN?

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) The Elliot Lake Snowbirds in conjunction with the East Algoma OPP are conducting another snowmobile licence course for persons between the ages of 12 and 15 years of age. Classes will be held at the Snowbirds Clubhouse on January 13, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Cost is $30.00.

EXPENSIVE WATCH STOLEN!

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) The East Algoma OPP is requesting the assistance of the public regarding the theft of a Rolex watch. The watch, which is valued at over $5,000.00, was taken during a break and enter at a residence in December 2007.

If you are aware of the whereabouts of the watch or may have been approached to purchase the item, please contact police or crime stoppers.

Being in possession of a stolen item will net charges for the buyer and/or suspect.
