Theft, impaired, assault, and more

The following are news releases from the Ontario Provincial Police:

JOHNSON TOWNSHIP - On July 27, 2017, shortly before 1 p.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a sexual assault that had just occurred in the Town of Desbarats. Investigation determined that a 26-year old-female was sexually assaulted by a male known to her.

As a result of the investigation, a 59-year-old male, from Desbarats, Ontario, was charged with: Sexual Assault, contrary to section 271 of the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on July 31, 2017.

THESSALON - July 28, 2017, shortly after 11 a.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a disturbance at an apartment complex on Algoma Street East in the Town of Thessalon.

A male was bringing out his recycling when he encountered his neighbor who was intoxicated. The intoxicated male began to argue him and he felt threatened.   

The investigation determined the intoxicated male was bound by a Recognizance and was conditions to be of good behaviour. Police also observed the male outside the complex carrying an open container of liquor. While being arrested the male began to resist police.

As a result of the investigation, Wayne Kletke, 54 years of age, from Thessalon, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Resist Peace Officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Breach of Recognizance, contrary to section 811 of the CC;
  • Having Liquor in Open Container in Other than Licensed Premises, Residence or Private Place, contrary to section 31(2) of the Liquor Licence Act (LLA)
  • Being intoxicated in a Public Place, contrary to section 31(4) of the LLA.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on September 21, 2017.

BRUCE MINES - On July 29, 2017, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol in the Town of Bruce Mines.

Shortly after 2 a.m., police observed a male walking on the sidewalk carrying an open container of liquor and smoking a cannabis marihuana cigarette. Police spoke with the male who advised he had a valid prescription for marihuana. The male was unable to produce the prescription.

 A police query revealed the male was bound by a Recognizance and was on conditions not to possess or consume any unlawful drugs except with a valid prescription.

As result of the investigation, Michael Livesey, 56 years of age, from Barrie, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Fail to Comply with Recognizance, contrary to section 145(3) of the Criminal Code; and with
  • Possession of a Schedule II Substance- Cannabis Marihuana-Under 30 grams, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

The accused is schedule to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on October 5, 2017.

THESSALON - On July 29, 2017, shortly before 12 p.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a theft of an Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) on Church Street in the Town of Thessalon. A female had taken an ORV from her ex-boyfriend's yard the night prior.

As a result of the investigation, a 24 year old female, from Thessalon, Ontario, was charged with;

  • Theft over $5000 of a Motor Vehicle, contrary to section 334(a) of the Criminal Code (CC); and with
  • Trespassing at Night, contrary to section 177 of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on August 11, 2017.

On July 30, 2017, shortly after 6 p.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint involving a possible impaired driver on Highway 17 near the Town of Thessalon.

Police located the vehicle travelling westbound on Government Road in the Tarbutt-Tarbutt Additional Township. Police activated the cruiser emergency lights and vehicle turned into a private driveway.

 The driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot into a field of tall grass. The male driver was located and while speaking with him, the officer determined the driver had been consuming alcohol.

As a result of the investigation, Roddy Rydall, 34 years age from Desbarats, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Driving While Ability Impaired- Motor Vehicle (Alcohol), contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Care or Control Over 80 milligrams, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the CC;
  • Operate a Motor Vehicle Without Insurance, contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act;
  • Use Plate Not Authorized for Vehicle, contrary to section 12(1)(d) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA);
  • Fail to Apply for Permit on Becoming Owner, contrary to section 11(2) of the HTA; and with
  • Driving Motor Vehicle with Open Container of Liquor, contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor Licence Act

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on August 8, 2017.
