COLLISION NEAR COCHRANE CLAIMS THREE LIVES

(Cochrane, ONTARIO.) – On Friday, July 2nd, 2010 at 7:05 p.m., members of the James Bay Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a two vehicle head-on collision in Calder Township on Highway 11, approximately 20 kilometres west of Cochrane. An 81-year-old woman driving a pick-up truck crossed the center line colliding with a minivan killing the 63-year-old male driver and his 56-year-old spouse. The couple’s 19-year-old daughter remains in hospital with serious injuries but is expected to recover.

Pronounced dead at the scene were Cochrane, Ontario residents – Angelo ANSELMO and his wife Meredith ANSELMO. Pronounced dead at the Lady Minto Hospital in Cochrane was Driftwood, Ontario resident – Dorothy McDONALD.

The Ontario Provincial Police reports that 7 people lost their lives in 5 separate fatal crashes this weekend on North Eastern Ontario Highways. All of these collisions were preventable. We would like to remind motorists to pay due care and attention while operating a motor vehicle, always wear seatbelts, report aggressive driving occurrences and above all drive sober.

COLLISION RESULTS IN SERIOUS INJURIES

(WHITE RIVER, ON.) – On July 2, 2010 at approximately 9:35 am Superior East OPP in White River were dispatched to a single vehicle roll-over on Highway 17 in HUNT TWP just south of White River. A northbound 2004 Elantra had lost control and rolled over in the west ditch. There were three occupants in the vehicle. The driver, a 22 year old male from SHERBROOKE, Quebec, sustained life threatening injuries as a result. Two male passengers both 22 years of SHERBROOKE, Quebec received minor injuries. The three males were taken to Lady Dunn Health Sciences Centre in WAWA and the driver was subsequently flown to SUDBURY, Ontario for further treatment. Names are not being released pending notification of next of kin.

DRIVER CHARGED FOR STUNT DRIVING

(Aweres Twp., ON) – On the 2nd July 2010 at 5:55 pm an OPP officer on patrol stopped a 2003 silver BMW travelling on Highway 17 north in Aweres Township at an alleged speed of 150 km/hr.

The driver, 29 year old Ian Cartmill of Burlington, Ontario was issued a summons for court on 8th September, 2010 for Stunt Driving under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

The vehicle was towed and driver’s license seized for 7 days.

MALE CHARGED WITH ASSAULT

(Havilland Twp., ON) – At approximately 7:00 pm on Saturday, 3rd July 2010 Sault Ste. Marie OPP detachment Officer’s were called to a residence in the 700 block of Havilland Shores Drive regarding an alleged assault.

A verbal argument ensued between a 41 year old female who was driving a vehicle and a 19 year old male (both known to each other) who was walking on the side of the roadway.

The 19 year old male then allegedly smashed the mirror off the driver’s side door and punched the victim in the face.

The accused, 19 year old Curtis Belohoubek of Springbank Drive in London, Ontario was arrested and charged with Assault and Mischief under $5000.00

The accused was released on a Promise to Appear for court on 9th August, 2010.

MALE ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT

(Aweres Twp., ON) – On the 4th July, 2010 at 2:00 am Sault Ste. Marie OPP officers were dispatched to a residence on Trout Lake Road in Aweres Township with regards to an assault complaint.

Investigation revealed that a 25 year old female victim had allegedly been physically assaulted by a 25 year old male party by being knocked to the ground and received injuries to her lower lower back and head area.

The victim did not require medical attention.

The 25 year old male accused was arrested and charged with Assault and being intoxicated in a Public Place and is being held pending a bail hearing today in Sault Ste. Marie Provincial Court.

UNINVITED PARTY GUEST ARRESTED

(Aweres Twp., ON) – At 1:07 am on the 4th July, 2010 OPP officer’s were dispatched to a residence in the 600 block of Highway 556 in Aweres Township regarding an uninvited party guest that was refusing to leave.

Upon Police arrival an intoxicated female was observed being assaultive. She was arrested and placed in the rear of the OPP Police cruiser where she continued to be assaultive towards Police.

Charged with being Intoxicated in a Public Place under the Liquor Licence Act of Ontario, and Cause Disturbance under the Criminal Code of Canada is 28 year old Jaclyn Hurst of Nichol Avenue in Sault Ste. Marie, ON.

The accused is to appear in court on 09 August, 2010.

DRIVER CHARGED IN MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION

NO INJURIES

(Fenwick Twp., ON) – On the 4th July, 2010 at 9:42 pm OPP were dispatched to the 300 block of Mission Road in Fenwick Township in response to a motor vehicle collision.

A black Chevy pick-up truck travelling westbound on Mission Road with 4 occupants in the vehicle was struck by a red Ford Ranger that was backing out of a driveway with the driver being the only occupant.

The driver of the red Ford Ranger, 31 year old Michael Robert Wilson of Elgin St. in Sault Ste. Marie, ON is charged with the following: Fail to yield from Private Drive and Drive while under Suspension contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

The accused is to appear in court on August 25th, 2010.
