IMPAIRED DRVER ARRESTED TRYING TO ELUDE RIDE CHECK On Thursday, July 5 at 11:55 pm Manitoulin OPP officers had set up a R.I.D.E. check point located on Hwy # 6 in Howland Township.

IMPAIRED DRVER ARRESTED TRYING TO ELUDE RIDE CHECK

On Thursday, July 5 at 11:55 pm Manitoulin OPP officers had set up a R.I.D.E. check point located on Hwy # 6 in Howland Township. Officers observed a black 2003 Saturn 4 door vehicle approach when the driver observed the RIDE check, the vehicle stopped and turned around and headed out in the opposite direction. Officers intercepted the vehicle and checked the driver. Investigation revealed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. As a result the driver was arrested and charged. Charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Failing to Provide a Breath Sample and Open Liquor in a Vehicle is Patrick WALTERS age 64 of Cambridge, Ontario. He was later released on a promise to appear for Gore Bay Criminal Court on July 23 to answer to the above charges.

ATTEMPT THEFT FOILED BY VEHICLE ALARM

On Friday 06 Jul 2012 at 1:30 AM Manitoulin OPP were called to an attempt vehicle break in and theft on Vankoughnet Street in Little Current. The owner of the pick up truck was alerted in the early morning hours when the truck alarm went off. The owner observed two indviduals dressed in black running from the driveway. Police searched the area with negative results in located the subjects.

Constable Allan Boyd Community Services Officer for the Manitoulin OPP is advising the public that they should be locking their vehicles when unattended either out or about or parked at home in their driveway. Many of these crimes are opportunity crimes which means if the vehicle is unlocked or keys left in it they become targets and the thieves know this. In this case the vehicle being locked and alarmed stopped the theft and alerted police which may have prevented other thefts from taking place that night. Constable Boyd asked if anyone knows anything about this crime to call police or Crime stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

YOUNG PERSON CHARGED IN VEHICLE COLLISION

On Friday, July 6 2012 at 10:14 am a 2008 Ford Focus was observed driving in an erratic manner at a high rate of speed on Water Street near Low Island Park in Little Current. Pedestrians observed the vehicle fail to negotiate a curve and lost control and entered the ditch. The vehicle driver then backed out and drove off at a high rate of speed. OPP were called and an investigation was started the vehicle and driver were located a short distance away. As a result of the investigation a 17 year-old young person has been charged with Careless Driving and Failing to Report an Accident under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario. No injuries occurred in this incident.

MANITOULIN OPP INVESTIGATING BUSINESS BREAK-IN

On Saturday, July 7 at 8:30 am Manitoulin OPP were called to the BOUYS RESTAURANT on Water Street in Gore Bay as the business had been broken into sometime over night. Officers arrived on the scene to find that culprit(s) entered the restaurant through the front door by prying off a screen window, Once inside an undisclosed amount of cash and liquor were stolen. An OPP Scene of Crimes officer attended and obtained evidence and photographs of the scene. The investigation is continuing. Manitoulin OPP are asking the public for assistance in solving this crime if that they has seen or know anything about this crime to call police or crime stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) any information that leads to an arrest or conviction can earn a person a cash reward.

DRIVER OF A DIRT BIKE STRUCK TREE

(Fenwick Twp., ON) - On Friday, July 6, 2012 at approximately 10:20 pm OPP responded to a single motor vehicle collision involving a dirt bike on Mission Road.

A twenty-two year old female was riding a dirt bike on a trail when she struck a tree.

She was wearing a helmet.

The driver was transported to Sault Area Hospital by ambulance with minor injuries.

The bike sustained minor damage.

No charges have been laid.

THEFT OF FOUR-WHEELER AND DIRT BIKE

(Aweres Twp., ON) On July 7, 2012 OPP were contacted by the owner advising that a  2000 yellow Bombardier Can-Am four-wheeler and JVS 125 blue dirt bike had been stolen within the last four days from his campground area.

The vehicles were secured with a cable lock in the tree-line area adjacent to the owner’s trailer.

DRIVER OF ATV SERIOUSLY INJURED

(Menard Twp., ON) On Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 6:15 pm OPP responded to a serious motor vehicle collision involving a single all terrain vehicle.

A forty two year old male from Sault Ste. Marie Ontario, driving a 2005 Polaris ADS received serious head injuries when he was involved in a collision on a trail in Menard Township near Laughing Lake Road.

The injured male was air lifted from the scene by air ambulance (ORNGE) to Sault Area Hospital.

The male remains in the intensive care unit at Sault Area Hospital.

The investigation is continuing.

THEFT FROM RESIDENCE

(Batchewana First Nation, ON)A small amount of cash and jewellery was reported stolen from a residence in the 100 block Gran St. on the Batchewana First Nation.

The theft took place between June 30, 2012 and July 4, 2012.

VEHICLE STOP 

(Fenwick Twp., ON) - On July 9, 2012 at approximately 12:30 am and OPP officer on general patrol on Highway 552 East observed a red Ford Econoline van weaving on the roadway.

The vehicle was stopped and further investigation revealed that the driver had been consuming alcohol.

Twenty-nine year old Sheldon Michael JAASKELAINEN of East St. Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario was arrested and charged with driving a motor vehicle exceeding 80 milligrams blood alcohol content contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was released on a Promise to a Appear for Provincial Court on August 13, 2012 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
