WEAPONS CHARGES LAID

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) On Sunday May 31, 2008 at approximately 2:27 a.m. the East Algoma Elliot Lake OPP received a call regarding an assault involving a knife.

An altercation between two males occurred in the area of Oakland Boulevard, Elliot Lake, Ontario. A female then became involved and pulled out a knife and struck four other males with a knife.

Raymond Michael O’CONNELL (41) of Elliot Lake, Ontario has been charged under the Criminal Code with:

Assault with a Weapon, Section 267(a)
Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, Section 88
Assault, Section 266
Breach of Probation Order, Section 733.1(1)
Fail to Comply – Undertaking before Officer in Charge, Section 145(5.1)

Heidi Amanda ZEIDLER (22) of Elliot Lake, Ontario has been charged under the Criminal Code with:

Aggravated Assault, Section 268
Assault with a Weapon, Section 267(a) (X3) and
Fail to Comply – Undertaking before Officer in Charge, Section 145(5.1)

The victims were treated at the Elliot Lake Hospital for minor injuries.

The two are scheduled to appear in bail court today in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

MISCHIEF TO MOTOR VEHICLES

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) On Friday May 30, 2008 the East Algoma Elliot Lake OPP received a complaint of mischief to two motor vehicles parked in the Paris Drive and Hergott Avenue areas of Elliot Lake, Ontario.

Suspects scratched the paint on both motor vehicles.

MISCHIEF TO SCHOOL CROSSING SIGNS

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) On Friday May 30, 2008 the East Algoma Elliot Lake OPP received a complaint of school crossing signs being damaged at the intersection of Ottawa Avenue and Washington Crescent.

The damage was first observed on Tuesday May 27th, 2008. The damage consisted of words being scratched into the reflective paint.

IMPAIRED CHARGES LAID

(St. Joseph Island, Ontario) On Sunday June 1, 2008 at approximately 2:10 p.m. the East Algoma Thessalon OPP received a traffic complaint regarding an erratic driver.

The motor vehicle was located on Highway 548 at the Junction of Highway 17. James Andrew KING (43) of Laird Township has been charged with:

1. Impaired Driving – Motor Vehicle, Section 253(a) Criminal Code

2. Over 80 mgs – Operate Motor Vehicle, Section 253(b) Criminal Code

3. Operate a Motor Vehicle without Insurance, Section 2(1) (a), Compulsory
Automobile Act

4. Use plate not authorized for vehicle, Section 12(1) (d) Highway Traffic Act

KING was released on a Promise to Appear in Thessalon Court on July 10, 2008.

YOU SHOULDN’T DRIVE WHEN YOU HAVE A SUSPENDED LICENCE

(Hodgins Twp., Ont.) A traffic stop by an OPP officer on Highway 556 in Hodgins Township on Friday afternoon found a male driver to be driving without a seatbelt and under suspension for unpaid fines.

Charged for Driving Under Suspension and failing to wear a seatbelt under the Highway Traffic Act is Arthur SOLOMON (35 years) of Garden River, Ontario.

BEAR SPOTTED IN LAIRD TOWNSHIP

(Laird Twp., Ont.) A bear was spotted by a home owner on Cemetery Road in Laird Township early Friday evening.

The bruin was in the back field behind the residence where the horses were kept. The bear eventually left without incident.

11 YEAR OLD BOY HIT BY A TRUCK

(Batchewana First Nation, Ont.) On Sunday, June 1st 2008 Batchewana First Nation Police were advised that on Saturday May 31st at around 1:30 pm. an 11 year old boy was hit by a sports utility vehicle.

Investigation revealed that the boy was riding west on his bicycle on Frontenac Street when the mirror of a black sports utility vehicle with tinted windows traveling in the same direction struck the child and knocked him off his bike.

This occurred near Sewell’s gas bar.

The truck did not stop. The child received minor injuries and did not require medical attention.

SINGLE VEHICLE ROLLOVER ON RANGER LAKE ROAD

(Daumont Twp., Ont.) A single vehicle rollover on Ranger Lake road east of Vixen Lake yesterday evening around 10:30 p.m. left a male driver and passenger with minor injuries.

The car was totaled and had to be towed.

Charged with Failing to Report an Accident under the Highway Traffic Act is 26 year old Terrance CHARETTE OF 1455 Peoples Road, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

OPP MARINE SPOT CHECKS REVEAL LIQUOR VIOLATIONS

(Reilly Twp., Ont.) OPP Marine Patrol on Ranger Lake over the weekend resulted in two boaters being charged with open liquor violations.

Charged with having liquor in open container in other than licensed premises, residence or private place is 48 year old David MCFADDEN of Middlesex, Ontario.

Also charged is 56 year old Lawrence MANLY of London, Ontario.

OPP ARREST TWO FOR MANSLAUGHTER

(ESPANOLA, ON) – On May 30, 2008 at 11:50 a.m., members of the Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a residence on Vanalstine Road, Baldwin Township (McKerrow) regarding a sudden death.

Upon officers’ arrival at the scene, they observed obvious signs of trauma to the body.

As a result of the investigation, two males were arrested and are in custody. Charged with Manslaughter are: Jamie Marvin VANALSTINE, age 29 and Robert Alex VANALSTINE, age 29, both from Baldwin Township (McKerrow). They will appear for a bail hearing in Sudbury Court on Monday, June 2nd, 2008.

The deceased is identified as Shawn Joseph THIBEAULT, age 30, also of Baldwin Township (McKerrow). A post mortem will be conducted on Monday, June 2, 2008.

The investigation is being led by Detective Inspector Mark Pritchard of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) with investigators from the Espanola Crime Unit and the assistance of the OPP Forensic Identification Unit.
