BROKEN WINDOWS, PAINTBALLS… EGGS.. AND MORE…. (Elliot Lake, Ont.) The City of Elliot Lake has been victim of several mischief incidents during the past month.
BROKEN WINDOWS, PAINTBALLS… EGGS.. AND MORE….

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) The City of Elliot Lake has been victim of several mischief incidents during the past month. Complaints are of broken car windows, of eggs being thrown at homes, homes being hit with paintballs and broken windows.

The East Algoma OPP is requesting the assistance of the public in identifying the culprits. Anyone with information regarding the above incidents is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

If you see suspicious activity in your neighborhood, please do not hesitate to contact police. Be a good neighbor and look out for each other.

Sentencing for Theft- 2005 Investigation

(Blind River, Ont.) Blind River resident was sentenced on Theft charges stemming from a 2005 investigation involving misappropriation of municipal funds.

Kelly ETHIER 38-years old, of Blind River entered a plea of guilt on the 29 May 2008 and was sentenced as follows:

12-month conditional sentence and confined to her home for the first 4 months, with some limited exceptions. For the remaining 8 months she will be confined to her residence from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
Partial restitution was made.

UPDATE: Road Closure Advisory

HIGHWAY NOW OPEN

The Ontario Provincial Police advise the public of the following road closure.

Location: Hwy 17 18 kms South of White River.

Detachment area: White River

Time of road closure: 0900 hrs

Reason for the closure: Tractor Trailer MVC

Detour: None at this time.

Estimated duration of closure: Unknown at this time.

LOADER DAMAGED

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) The OPP is currently investigating a mischief to a front-end loader. The loader was parked at the lift station by Angel Lake when unknown person(s) entered the lot and kicked in a window of the loader. Once inside they discharged a fire extinguisher and also cause damaged to two other windows. The mischief occurred sometime during the evening of June 18, 2008.

ARGUMENT NETS ASSAULT CHARGES FOR LOCAL MALE

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) June 20th, 2008 at approximately 8:53 p.m. officers of the East Algoma OPP received a call regarding a possible assault.

On scene police learned that the suspect and the victim had allegedly engaged in a verbal argument when the suspect struck the victim.

Charged with Assault and Breach of Recognizance is Joshua Damon SPENCE (33) of Elliot Lake. SPENCE remains in custody awaiting a Bail Hearing on June 23, 2008.

WHEN YOU WALK AROUND WITH OPEN LIQUOR AND THE POLICE DRIVE BY……….

(Aweres Twp., Ont.) OPP officers on patrol Friday evening in the Maki Lake Road area observed two males walking with open liquor.

Charged with Having Open Liquor in other than licensed premises, residence or private place is 25 year old Derek BROWN of Peace Tree Drive in Aweres Twp., and 25 year old Luke OFFICER of Highway 552 in Vankoughnet Twp.

BEAR SIGHTING REPORTED

(Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) OPP received two bear complaints on Saturday evening between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm.

The first complaint was received from a resident on Pineshores Road in Fenwick Township.

The bruin entered a chicken coop on the property. No livestock were injured and the bear left on its own.

A second bear was spotted in the yard of a residence on Maple Leaf Road in Macdonald Township.

The bear was reportedly going through garbage. It was gone prior to Police arrival.

The OPP would like to remind the public to use care when storing and disposing of garbage.

DRIVER ESCAPES INJURY IN MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION WITH DEER

(Hwy 17, GARDEN RIVER FIRST NATION, Ont.) A motor vehicle collision between a deer and a vehicle Saturday evening around 10:00 p.m. resulted in minor damage to the vehicle.

The vehicle was traveling in the westbound lane on Highway 17 when a deer ran in front of the vehicle.

The deer succumb to the injuries.

COTTAGE BREAK IN’S REPORTED

(Ley Twp., Ont.) A break in was reported to OPP Sunday morning to a camp on Cedar Road in Ley Township that occurred within the last three weeks.

Stolen items included a yellow plastic tool box with an assortment of hand tools, two red 5 gallon gas cans, an axe, and Bushnell binoculars.

A second break in to another camp on Cedar Road in Ley Township within the past 5 days resulted in the following items reported stolen: plates, bowls, dish cloths, beach towels and a flashlight.

OPP OFFICER INJURED WHILE INVESTIGATING MISCHIEF REPORT

(Hodgins Twp., Ont.) On Sunday, the 22nd June 2008 at approximately 6:15 p.m. an OPP officer was dispatched to investigate an allegation of mischief at the former CN Station in Searchmont, Ontario across from the General Store.

Information revealed that smashing glass could be heard coming from within the abandoned building that the three suspects were observed leaving going towards the old abandoned Mill located on Finn Road.

The officer attended the Old Mill and located three youths, 2 males and one female. While questioning the two males, they both fled on foot. The officer took the female into custody.

While walking out of the building the Officer fell due to a rotten set of step joists causing him to hit his head and suffer a laceration to the fore head.

The incident is still under investigation.

JOINT M.N.R. AND O.P.P. PATOLS OVER THE WEEKEND NET MANY CHARGES

(Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) Between Friday, 20th June and Sunday 22nd June 2008 the Ministry of Natural Resources Conservation officers and members of the OPP Highway Safety Division Marine Unit conducted joint marine patrols on Montreal River, Rock Lake, Goulais River and Trout Lake.

56 vessel contacts were made that resulted in the following:

Small Vessel Regulation charges: 5 (4 of those for no personal flotation devices)

Small Vessel Regulation warnings: 24

Liquor License Act charges: 7

Ontario Fishery Regulations charges: 2 (preseason fishing and over limit)

Ontario Fishery Regulations warnings: 1
