FOUR 12’S PLUS ONE “90” – YOU DO THE MATH !!

Sault Ste Marie, Ont.,

Some people still don’t seem to be able to add up the consequences of drinking and driving.

So far this weekend officers with the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment have pulled the drivers licences from five different drivers for drinking and driving.

Officers were conducting R.I.D.E. and seat belt spot checks at different locations east and north of Sault Ste Marie. As a result of these checks four drivers had their licence suspended for 12 hours after roadside breath tests indicated they were in the “warn” area of the roadside testing program.

On Saturday morning at about 4:00 a.m. an officer with the Sault Ste Marie Detachment was on patrol of Hwy 17 in Garden River. The officer noticed a vehicle in front of him having some difficulty maintaining lane position. The vehicle was pulled over and the driver was taken back to the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment for further testing.

As a result of Intoxilyzer tests and the officer’s observations, the driver was charged with drinking and driving. Twenty one year old Mathew WRIGHT, of Lake George Road in Echo Bay, has been charged with one count of Driving While Over .08 Contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

In compliance with the Automatic Drivers Licence Suspension Program, Mr. Wright’s licence has been suspended for the next 90 days. He will appear in court on May 7 2007 to answer to the charge.

DRUG SEIZURE AT SPOT CHECK

Heyden, Ont.,

A Heyden man faces a drug charge after being “sniffed out” at one of our R.I.D.E. checks.

Last night at about 11:00 p.m. officers were conducting another spot check on Hwy 556 in Heyden near the Aweres School. A car came through the spot check and the officers could detect a strong odour of suspected cannabis.

A further check of the car and driver was conducted and officers located about 15 grams of suspected marijuana in the vehicle. As a result of this seizure eighteen (18) year old William BRECKENRIDGE of Trout Lake Road in Heyden has been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance. He will appear in court on 30 April 2007 to answer to his charge.

THIS IS NOT THE VERSION OF ICE CAPADES THAT WE WANT TO SEE

Sault Ste Marie, Ont.,

Officers with the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment have been called for two separate incidents for problems on area lakes.

Last night at about 6:00 p.m. officers were called to the Whiskey Bay/Batchawana Bay area after a resident in the area saw a car stuck in the ice off shore.

Someone had driven their car onto the ice about a mile off shore and got the car stuck in soft ice. As officers arrived in the area they saw a person walking away from the vehicle toward shore. Two snow machines arrived and picked the person up. They tried very briefly to get the car out of the ice but were not successful. Sometime through the night the car was removed from the ice.

This morning at about 8:45 a.m. police were called to the Lake George area of Laird Twp after a resident in the area reported and man and a snow machine through the ice and into the water.

A group of four machines were traveling across Lake George when one of the four machines went into the water. One of the other operators had rescue equipment with him and threw the man in the water a length of rope. The man managed to get out of the water and the rest of the group got him back to land safely.

The man was very cold and shaken up but he did not need medical assistance.

JOINT SNOW MACHINES PATROLS CONTINUING

Batchawanana, Ont.,

Officers with the OPP Traffic and Marine Unit once again teamed up the MNR Conservation Officers for joint snow machine patrols.

On Friday and Saturday officers patrolled the Carp Road and Mile 67 Road area in Batchawana. Six people will have a very short time to show up at the OPP office with proof of insurance and val tags on their snow machines or be tracked down and given tickets for same. Two others were charged with liquor offences after being found with open alcohol in a place other than their camp or a licenced premise. Five other snow machine operators were given the benefit of warnings for various other infractions.
