(Blind River, Ont.) A two vehicle Collision in Algoma Mills has caused Police to close the highway temporarily.
Just before 5:00 a.m. a collision between a pickup truck and a passenger car occurred approx two kilometers east of Lake Lauzon Rd. on Hwy 17.

Apparently one person has died as a result of the collision and a second is injured.

The investigation is still in its preliminary stages and Police are not releasing any other details at this time. The investigators are awaiting the arrival of some Technical Traffic Collision Investigators before the highway will be reopened.

More details will follow immediately as they are available.

Update: One Lane Hwy 17 Open

(Algoma Mills, Ont.) One lane has been opened at the scene of the fatal motor vehicle crash in Algoma Mills. Traffic will be clearing at a slow pace as the traffic flow fluctuates between westbound and eastbound traffic.

Update-2 Highway 17Open- Both Lanes

(Algoma Mills, Ont.) East Algoma O.P.P. advising that both lanes of Hwy 17 in Algoma Mills are now open.

Preliminary investigation has determined that the West- bound car had lost control after coming into contact with the shoulder of the road and appears to have overcorrected and drove into the path of the eastbound pick-up truck.

The victim’s next of kin have yet to be contacted so no further information regarding the identity of the victim is being released regarding the collision.

Fatal Crash Victim Identified

(Algoma Mills, Ont.) Police have identified the victim of this morning’s collision on Hwy 17 as 30-year-old Douglas FINCH of Burlington, Ontario.

Finch was the driver of a westbound vehicle that appeared to loose control after coming in contact with the shoulder of the road and veering into the path of an eastbound pick-up truck.

Island Break and Enters

Squirrel Island, Ont., Sault Ste Marie OPP are investigating a series of nine break and enters on Squirrel Island in the middle of the St. Mary’s River.

It is believed that sometime between early January of this year and this past weekend thieves entered camps, boathouses and sheds of nine property owners. So far the victims have advised that two boat motors, chain saws, electronic equipments and a variety of other equipment have been stolen.

Several of the victims will make their way across the river this week to examine their properties.
