Snow Machine through the Ice

(Goulais Twp., ON)  On Friday, March 22nd, 2013 at approximately 04:30 am Sault Ste.Marie OPP received a call regarding of 2 males overdue on a snow machine returning to Sault Ste. Marie from Goulais River. 

Shortly after this initial call, OPP received a call from a resident on Water Crescent Road in Goulais River advising that two males were at the residence and had gone through the ice on their snowmobile.

One male, twenty-four years of age from Goulais River, and a second male, twenty six years of age from Sault Ste. Marie were transported to Sault Area Hospital by ambulance suffering from hypothermia.

OPP remind snowmobilers: 

  • Check ice thickness and quality before riding onto any frozen water.
  • Understand that ice conditions may vary from day to day, from hour to hour and from place to place.
  • Never travel on ice alone, at night or while impaired.
  • Avoiding slushy ice, untracked ice, or ice near moving water or dock bubblers.
  • Watch out for obstacles like rocks, stumps, docks, ice roads and fishing huts.
  • Wearing a buoyant snowmobile suit and carrying ice picks.

DRIVER CHARGED IN COLLISION

No Injuries

(Fenwick Twp., ON) - On Saturday, March 23, 2013 at approximately 6:10 pm OPP responded to a two vehicle collision on Highway 17 near the Goulais River Bridge.

A 2004 Ford pick up truck was turning northbound onto Highway 17 from a private drive when it pulled out and struck a tractor trailer travelling northbound.

No injuries were reported.

Thirty-eight year old Graham COULOMBE of French River, Ontario was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with Fail to Yield from driveway.

STOLEN SNOWMOBILE

(Goulais Twp., ON)  A green 1998 Polaris XLT snow machine was reported stolen on Friday, March 22nd.

The snow machine was stolen from a camp in the 100 block of James Street off of Goulais Mission Road.

LOCAL FEMALE CHARGED WITH ASSAULT

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) –   On the 23rd, of March 2013 at approximately 2:09 a.m. police were called to attend a local establishment regarding a possible assault.

OPP officers attended and through investigation learned that the victim was allegedly assaulted by the accused in the bathroom.

The victim received non-life threatening injuries.

Charged with assault is Amanda HILTZ (30) of Elliot Lake.  The accused is scheduled to attend Elliot Lake court on June 4, 2013.

DAYLIGHT BREAK AND ENTER

(Elliot Lake, Ontario)  The Ontario Provincial Police is investigating a break and enter in Elliot Lake.

Friday, March 22, 2013 at approximately 2:21 p.m. police attended Pearson Drive in Elliot Lake in regards to a break and enter.  The victim reports that someone attended the residence knocked on the door and ran the doorbell several times.  The resident of the home did not answer the door and moments later heard someone kicking the door open.  The accused noticed the homeowner and left the area.

No one was injured and nothing was taken.
