DEER SEASON—ON THE HIGHWAY

Sault Ste Marie, Ont.,
Last week saw the start of deer season in this area. The fields, bush and woodlots have become overrun with grown adults dressed in blaze orange trying to bag a freezer full of venison for the next year. Weeks of preparation, target practice and planning went into the custom know as the “fall hunt”

BUT—two people, who had no intention of slaying one of the four legged “Bambi’s”, got more than they bargained for on the weekend.

Two people struck and killed two deer on Hwy 17 over the weekend. On Saturday November 8, 2003 two separate collisions saw the two deer killed as they tried to cross Hwy 17. Both the collisions occurred on the highway east of Sault Ste Marie and both of the collisions happened at night.

The area east of Sault Ste Marie is known for a high winter deer population. Using your high beam headlights, when traffic flow allows, will give you a greater advantage of seeing one of these animals sooner at night. A second idea is not to overdrive your headlights. This practice means driving at a speed that allows you to see what is in the range of your headlights so that if there is an obstacle on the roadway, (like a deer) then you will have enough time to react and hopefully avoid a collision.

Drive carefully. You never know what is out there
