TRAFFIC STOP RESULTS IN SEIZURE OF DRUGS, MONEY (White River, ON)- On November 17, 2009 at 6:17 pm Superior East officers in White River had occasion to stop a northbound vehicle from Quebec for a Highway Traffic Act infraction.
TRAFFIC STOP RESULTS IN SEIZURE OF DRUGS, MONEY

(White River, ON)- On November 17, 2009 at 6:17 pm Superior East officers in White River had occasion to stop a northbound vehicle from Quebec for a Highway Traffic Act infraction. This occurred approximately 35 kilometres south of White River. As a result of further investigation at the scene it was discovered that the male driver and female passenger were in possession of a quantity of what appeared to be marihuana. Along with the marihuana officers discovered approximately $37000.00 in various denominations. Pacino BENITEZ age 50 and Maria BENITEZ age 18 both of MONTREAL, Quebec have been charged with Possession of Marihuana over 30 grams contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substance Act. The money located in the vehicle has also been seized pending further investigation by Superior East members. Both subjects were released on a Recognizance returnable on January 11, 2010 at Wawa Criminal Court.

MISCHIEF TO ROAD GRADER

(Chapleau, ON)- On November 18, 2009 Superior East members in Chapleau received a complaint of damage caused to a 1987 Champion Grader, yellow in colour while it was parked at the Load Check on Highway 129 near Chapleau the previous night. Unknown person(s) had broken the windshield and the left side window with a blunt object, possibly a rock. Damage is estimated to be in access of $2500.00. Police are requesting the public’s assistance in solving this crime. Anyone with any information is asked to call The OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

R.I.D.E.

(Superior East)- RIDE checks conducted throughout the Superior East patrol area resulted in 420 vehicles being checked with no drinking and driving offences being noted. However, 4 Seatbelt related charges were laid as a result. Motorists are reminded that all occupants in a motor vehicle must have access to a seatbelt and be properly buckled in. Seatbelts do save lives.

***UPDATE*** ARMED ROBBERY

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) On Sunday, November 22, 2009 the East Algoma OPP arrested and charged a 16-year-old male in relation to the Armed Robbery at the C & R Variety Convenience Store on Esten Drive in Elliot Lake.

The youth is charged with the following:

Robbery with a Weapon
Disguise with Intent
Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

The name of the youth will not be released under the jurisdiction of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The youth is in custody awaiting a bail hearing scheduled for November 23, 2009.
