One person dies in fatal motor vehicle collision (Sowerby, Ontario) - On Sunday October 16 at approximately 3:20 p.m., members of the East Algoma – Thessalon OPP responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 east of Thessalon, Ontario.
One person dies in fatal motor vehicle collision

(Sowerby, Ontario) - On Sunday October 16 at approximately 3:20 p.m., members of the East Algoma – Thessalon OPP responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 east of Thessalon, Ontario.

A westbound Chevrolet Impala crossed the centerline for an unknown reason into the path of an eastbound Yamaha Roadster motorcycle.

The driver of the Chevrolet Impala Thomas HEARD (73) and his passenger Wilma HEARD (74) of Thessalon, Ontario were transported by ambulance to the Thessalon Hospital with minor injuries and released.

The driver of the Motorcycle Mark Guenette (50) of Blind River, Ontario died as a result of his injuries at the scene.

A Technical Traffic Collision Investigator attended the scene to assist with the investigation.

The investigation is ongoing.

Weather at the time of the collision was sunny and dry.

Routine Traffic Stop Results in Drug Seizure

On Monday 10 Oct 05 at 1:47 am Constable Robert Manley had the occasion to stop and check a 1990 Silver Pontiac on Hwy 542 in Gordon township. Upon checking the vehicle an alleged open bottle of alcohol was located. Further investigation of the driver and passengers produced a small quantity of Marijuana. As a result of this traffic stop a passenger in the vehicle was charged. Charged with Having open liquor in a motor vehicle under the liquor licence Act and possession of a controlled substance under 30 grams under the Controlled Drug and Substance Act is Matthew Peter STOKES age 21 Mills Township.

Vandals Hit Canada Post Mailboxes

On Monday 10 Oct 05 at 1:29 pm Manitoulin OPP were called to the Little Current Post Office located on Water Street in Little Current as three mail boxes had been damaged. A tool was used to pry the boxes. It appears at this point in the investigation that they were random acts of vandalism and no one was a specific target. Police are asking the public for assistance in that is anyone knows information about these crimes they are asked to call crime stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Constable Randy Dedman is investigating.

OPP Called To Assist With Traffic Control at Hockey Game

On Friday 14 Oct 05 at 8:50 pm Manitoulin OPP were called to assist with traffic as complaints of a back log of traffic in both the northbound and southbound lanes of Hwy 6 in Little Current. Police arrived on scene to find employees of N.E.M.I. exercising there legal strike right of picketing walking back and forth on Gammie St. near the Little Current Complex. This slowed traffic from entering the parking lot that caused a major backlog of vehicles that were attending for a N.O.J.H.A. hockey game. Officers explained to the employees that they could not block the movement on a public roadway. The employees then moved their job action to the parking log.


OPP Respond to Fire at Meadow View Apartments

On Saturday evening 15 Oct 05 at 10:33 pm Manitoulin OPP were called to assist the Central Manitoulin Fire Department in evacuating residents of Meadow View Apartments on Nixon Street in Mindemoya. The fire department arrived immediately and extinguished the fire contained to a basement apartment. All persons were evacuated and accounted for. The Central Manitoulin Fire Department indicated that the fire might have been started from a heating pad near a piece of furniture. The actual cause will not be finally determined until the Ontario Fire Marshals Office and the CMFD complete their investigation. No one was injured in this incident.

Unregistered Firearms Seized in Customs Investigation

On Sunday 16 Oct 05 an American citizen who has a cottage on Manitoulin Island in Bidwell Township has had his guns seized by Manitoulin OPP after a call from Canada Customs. Customs officials were investigating a male U.S citizen at Canada Customs in Sault Ste Marie boarder when it was learned that the subject had 3 unregistered firearms in a cottage on Manitoulin. They called police to assist in the investigation. The firearms have been seized and the investigation is continuing.

Manitoulin OPP Investigate Human Remains Found

(Providence Bay, On.) – On Thursday 13 October 2005 at 3:53 pm Manitoulin were advised to attend a lot where a home was being constructed on the east side of Hwy 511 just north of Government Road, in Providence Bay. The property was being excavated for the construction of a new home when the backhoe, which was digging the foundation, came upon items in the ground. Upon closer examination it was found to be three human skulls and a variety of human bones. Police were immediately called to the scene. The Manitoulin OPP along with the OPP Crime Unit and local Coroner is conducting the investigation.

It is believed that the remains are of an ancient nature. The bones have been sent through the regional coroner to have a forensic anthropologist examine the remains to confirm their nature. No foul play is suspected at this time. The investigation is continuing.

Stolen Van Recovered

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) On October 14th, 2005 police attended a local business in regards to a stolen vehicle.

Police learned that the locked vehicle was parked at the back of the Algo Centre Mall and sometime between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. the vehicle went missing. Investigation revealed that the keys were stolen from an unattended coat. The van is described a 2005 Chrysler TWC, blue light in color.

Later in the evening at approximately 9:46 p.m. police were contacted in regards to a blue van being in the ditch at the corner or Timber Rd and Highway 108. On scene police determined that it was in fact the stolen vehicle. The van did not appear to have any damage however the stereo had been removed along with several tools. The van has been seized for further investigation.

Broken Window

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) The East OPP are currently investigating a broken window report. On October 14th, 2005 at approximately 12:00 p.m. unknown person(s) broke a window at 7 Timmins Rd. The complainant reports that when he heard the window breaking he immediately looked out the window and did not see anyone in the area.

The outer pane window was broken and approximate value is $500.00.
