(Elliot Lake, Ont.) On October 21st, 2007 at approximately 1:00 a.m. officers of the East Algoma OPP set up a RIDE program on highway 108 in the City of Elliot Lake.

Shortly after setting up, police stopped a vehicle and officers requested the driver provide a breath sample.

Charged with operating a motor vehicle with over 80 milligrams of alcohol is Helmut ZIMMER (69) of Elliot Lake.

ZIMMER is scheduled to appear in court in Elliot Lake on December 4th, 2007.

LOCAL BUSINESS VICTIM OF MISCHIEF

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) Police are currently investigating a mischief at a local business in Elliot Lake.

Investigation revealed that between 11:00 p.m. October 18th, 2007 and 8:00 a.m. October 19th, 2007, unknown person(s) smashed a 4’ X 5’ plate glass window of a business located on Ontario Avenue. Entry was not gained as the inside pane of glass stayed in place. Approximate damage of $300.00.

Drug Charges with Impaired Driving

(Blind River, Ont.) On Friday 19 October 2007 officers on patrol in the Blind River area noticed a parked vehicle on Woodward Ave in Blind River. The vehicle was running with lights on and two occupants inside.
Upon investigation officers discovered that the person occupying the driver’s seat was exhibiting signs of Impairment by alcohol and another officer noticed a white powdered substance in the vehicle.

Two people were arrested and charged.
48-year-old Edwin J CHIBLOW of Mississauga First Nation was charged with Having the Care or Control of a Motor vehicle while ability impaired and Possession of a Controlled substance under the Controlled Drug and Substance Act.
Also Charged was:
50-year-old Lindy CHIBLOW of Mississauga First Nation

Both are to appear in Blind River Court on 06 Dec. 2007

Spragge Fatal Collision - Update

(Blind River, Ont.) At approximately 2:30 p.m. on Hwy 17 in the Township of the Northshore (Spragge) an east bound car driven by an 84 year-old female collided with a west bound dump truck.
The impact spun the car and left it on the South shoulder of the road and disabled the dump truck causing it to skid into the south ditch. The driver of the dump truck was not injured.
The female driver of the car had to be extricated and was transported to St. Joseph’s Health Center in Blind River where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The deceased has been identified as: 84-year-old Ida LeClair of McKerrow , Ontario.
An autopsy is to be conducted today in Sault Ste. Marie to determine the cause of death.


INVESTIGATION INTO FATAL ATV CRASH CONTINUES

(Montreal River, Ont.) Members of the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment are continuing their investigation into a fatal ATV crash from yesterday.

At about 4:30 a.m. on Sunday October 21, 2007 police and rescue officials were called to the Mile 67 Road just south of Montreal River. The investigation is revealing that three men were in a hunting party located some 31 kilometers in on Mile 67 Road. The three men left their camp on ATV’s at about 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. They had planned to meet back at the camp at about 7:00 p.m. Saturday night.

At 9:00 p.m. the deceased had not returned and the other two started to search for him. At about 3:00 a.m. the deceased was located lying in the middle of Mile 67 Road. At about 4:30 a.m. the other two were finally able travel far enough to get cell phone coverage and called police.

The preliminary investigation is indicating that the deceased was traveling on Mile 67 Road when he lost control of his ATV. The bike rolled several times. The man was not wearing his helmet. Several bottles of beer, both full and empty, were found at the crash site.

An autopsy is scheduled for today in Sault Ste Marie. The deceased has been identified as forty six (46) year old Kevin MOLLER of Porcupine Ontario.

R.I.D.E. UNIT FINDS ONE UNDER AGE IMPAIRED DRIVER

(Batchewana First Nation, Ont.) A R.I.D.E check on the Batchewana First Nation on Saturday morning found one underage teenager drinking and driving.

At about 1:40 a.m. on Saturday 20 Oct 2007 officers with the Sault Ste Marie OPP were conducting a R.I.D.E. check at the intersection of Frontenac and Pontiac Streets on the Batchewana First Nation.

A vehicle approached the check point and drove past the officers and cruisers stopping some 100 feet past the area. A conversation with the driver revealed the presence of alcohol on her breath. She was given a roadside test and failed the test. Further testing at the police detachment indicated that she was over the legal limit to be driving.

As a result of this stop, a seventeen year old Garden River female faces charges of Driving While over .08 contrary to the Criminal Code and Driving With No Licence contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

ANOTHER DRUNK DRIVER TAKEN OFF THE ROAD

(Garden River First Nation, Ont.) Patrol officers with the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment found another drunk driver this weekend.

On Sunday morning at about 1:30 a.m. officers were traveling on Hwy 17 in Garden River. They noticed the car in front of them was traveling over the center line then onto the shoulder of the roadway. The car was pulled over and this driver showed signs that he had been drinking.

Further investigation confirmed the officer’s suspicions and as a result of this stop the driver was charged.

Twenty six (26) year old Jason ALTON of 420 McNabb Street in Sault Ste Marie faces three charges. He has been charged with Impaired Driving, Driving While Over the Legal Limit of .08 and Breach of Probation.

MYSTERY DRIVER TAKES OUT A HYDRO POLE

(Goulais River, Ont.) Sault Ste Marie OPP were called to Kelly Creek Road in Goulais River over the weekend after an pick up truck smashed into a hydro pole.

On Saturday morning at about 6:00 a.m. a motorist traveling on Kelly Creek Road in Goulais River found a pick up truck upside down in a ditch with hydro wires lying across the truck.

Police arrived to find no one in the truck and no one around the area. It appears that the truck was traveling on Kelly Creek Road when the truck entered the ditch and snapped a hydro pole. The truck came to rest upside down with the hydro wires on the truck.

So far, the driver of the vehicle has not come forward to offer an explanation.
