OPP INVESTIGATE SUDDEN DEATH OF MONTEITH INMATE

(IROQUOIS FALLS) – The Ontario Provincial Police is investigating a sudden death at Monteith Correctional Complex, Monteith Ontario.

The body an inmate was located in his cell by Monteith Correctional Complex staff shortly after midnight (Monday, September 10, 2007).

A post-mortem examination has been schedule tomorrow afternoon in Sudbury. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The investigation is under the direction of Detective Inspector Tim Millar, OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.

OPP RETRACTION ISSUED

Sherise RAINS was not charged under the Criminal Code. She was arrested and transported to the Thessalon Detachment, where she was released unconditionally.

The firearm involved was not stolen from a residence on St. Joseph Island.

FIREARMS CHARGES LAID

(Bruce Mines, Ontario) On Sunday September 9, 2007 members of the East Algoma Thessalon Detachment stopped a motor vehicle on Highway 17, in Bruce Mines, Ontario.

The two occupants John Frederick Beaton (31) and Sherise RAINS (21) of Thessalon, Ontario were arrested and transported to the Thessalon Detachment.

John Frederick BEATON has been charged under the Criminal Code with:

Possession of Prohibited or Restricted Firearm/ammunition, section 95(a)
Possess firearm with altered serial number, section 108(1)(b)
Unauthorized Possession of Firearm, section 91(1) and
Careless Use of Firearm, section 86(1)

Sherise RAINS has been charged under the Criminal Code with:

Unauthorized Possession of Weapon, section 91(2)
Break and Enter, section 348(1)(b)
Careless Use of Firearm, section 86(1)
Possession of Prohibited or Restricted Firearm/ammunition, section 95(a) and
Possess firearm with altered serial number, section 108(1)(b)

The break and enter charge is in relation to a break and enter that occurred on St. Joseph Island, Ontario between August 31 – September 1, 2007. The firearms charges are in relation to a firearm that was reported stolen from the above St. Joseph Island break and enter.

Both were released on a Promise To Appear in Thessalon court on November 22, 2007.

DRIVER STOPPED AT R.I.D.E. CHECK CHARGED

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) On Saturday September 8, 2007 at approximately 1:10 a.m. a motor vehicle was stopped at a R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) check in Elliot Lake, Ontario.

The driver of the motor vehicle Yvon PLANTE (49) was subsequently charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with Failure to Provide Breath Sample – Approved Screening Device, Section 254(5).

PLANTE is scheduled to appear in Elliot Lake court on November 6, 2007.


MALE ARRESTED ON OUTSTANDING FEDERAL WARRANT

(Blind River, Ontario) On Friday September 7, 2007 members of the East Algoma Blind River OPP observed a male that was wanted on an outstanding Federal warrant of apprehension and suspension of day pass from Parole.

Herb Wayne CARON (40) was observed on Lawton Street where he was arrested and transported to the Blind River Detachment. CARON was subsequently transported to the Algoma Treatment Rehab Center in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.


Mail Boxes Damaged

Three residents on Grant Road in Fenwick Township have had their mail boxes pulled out overnight on the 9th of September. The OPP are seeking the public’s assistance in finding out who is responsible for this needless damage. Anyone with information on this or any crime can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

RIDE Checks Result in 3 12 hours Suspensions

RIDE checks conducted this past weekend in the Sault Ste Marie OPP patrol area resulted in 3 12 hour suspension and 1 liquor license act charge. Officers conducted RIDE in three different locations, checking 45 vehicles. Drivers continue to risk criminal prosecution by drinking and driving. Sault Ste Marie OPP officers have charged 35 drivers with impaired drivers so far this year. This compares with 27 drivers charged last year. Officers have also issued 98 12 hour suspensions.
