MARIHUANA “GROW-OP” UNCOVERED CHARGES LAID

On the 5th September 2007 the OPP Joint Forces Drug Unit which consists of members from the OPP Drug Enforcement Section, OPP North East Region, Sault Ste Marie Police Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with assistance from Elliot Lake O.P.P. executed a Drug Search Warrant at a residence on Washington Crescent, in Elliot Lake .

As a result of the search Police located a Marihuana Growing Operation.

SEIZED Was:
- 208 Marihuana Plants (Street value $208,000.00)
- Dried Marihuana 22 grams (value $440.00)
- Growing equipment (valued at $5000.00)

Charged is: Bruce BOTHAM age 43 yrs of Elliot Lake)

Count #1 - Cultivation of a Controlled Substance 7(1) CDSA.
Count #2 - Poss. Controlled Substance for Trafficking 5(2) CDSA.
Count #3 - Poss. Of a Controlled Substance 4(1) CDSA.

BOTHAM is scheduled to Appear in Criminal Court in Elliot Lake in early November 2007.

MARIHUANA SEIZED:TRAFFICKING CHARGES LAID

On the 20th September 2007 the OPP Joint Forces Drug Unit which consists of members from the OPP Drug Enforcement Section, OPP North East Region, Sault Ste Marie Police Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police executed a Drug Search Warrant at a residence on Hutchison Ave.

As a result of the search 298.5 grams of Suspected Marihuana along with Drug paraphernalia was seized. Marihuana seized, has a Street value of $5970.00.

Charged is: Susan Gail WEIR (age 44 yrs of Elliot Lake)

Count #1 - Trafficking in Controlled Substance 5(1) CDSA.
Count #2 - Poss. Controlled Substance for Trafficking 5(2) CDSA.
Count #3 - Poss. Of a Controlled Substance 4(1) CDSA.

Also charged is Richard HENLEY (age 78 yrs)

Count #1 - Poss. Controlled Substance for Trafficking 5(2) CDSA.
Count #2 -Poss. Of a Controlled Substance 4(1) CDSA.

Both Accused are scheduled to Appear in Criminal Court in Elliot Lake in early November 2007.

SAULT AREA DRIVERS DONATE $2200.00 BACK TO THE ONTARIO GOVERNMENT

(Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) It appears that drivers on area side roads surrounding Sault Ste Marie have extra disposable cash to give back to their government.

Officers with the Sault Ste Marie Detachment once again were out in full force over the weekend checking drivers and passengers for seat belt use. Sault Ste Marie OPP along with police across the province are participating in the fall seat belt campaign.

Over the weekend officers charged fifteen drivers and five passengers with seat belt violations. The total fines issued adds up to $2200.00. What doesn’t add up is the trying to figure out just why after years of enforcement and education just why these people are not wearing their seat belts. Buckle up or pay up: it’s entirely up to you.

RIDE CHECK FIND YOUNG OFFENDERS WITH BOOZE AND TRAFFIC ISSUES

(Echo Bay, Ont.) Officers conducting RIDE checks on Hwy 638 over the weekend found two Bruce Mines kids who now need a way to make extra cash.

On Saturday morning at about 12:30 a.m. officers were conducting a RIDE checks on Hwy 638 north of Echo Bay. A vehicle was checked out and the officers found a 16 and 18 year old from Bruce Mines with two cases of beer. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a drivers licence and they had the wrong plates on the vehicle.

Several hundred dollars in fines and the price of a tow truck is what their adventure is costing the two.

MOTORCYCLE CRASH SENDS ONE MAN TO HOSPITAL

(Echo Bay, Ont.) A motorcycle crash late yesterday afternoon has sent one area man to Sault Area Hospital.

Yesterday at about 4:00 p.m. police and ambulance personnel were sent to Watsons Road in Echo Bay. Police arrived to find a man lying on the road with what appeared to be a broken leg. The preliminary investigation is indicating that the driver was traveling on a hill with a curve when the bike went down and slid down the roadway.

The twenty one year old man was taken to Sault Area Hospital with what is thought to be at least a badly broken leg. The crash is still under investigation and no decision on charges has been determined at this time.

ATV COLLISION TAKES A LIFE

(Wawa, Ontario) Superior East OPP, (Wawa) are investigating an ATV collision that occurred just off Highway 651 near Missanabie on the 21st of September 2007.

At 11:00am on Friday, 21 Sep 07, a 2001 Polaris ATV was driven off an open area, into the bush at which time the vehicle rolled onto its side and the driver was thrown. There was minimal damage to the 4-wheeler. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

The driver, 59 year old Gerald KURT of Heidelberg, Ontario was taken to Lady Dunn hospital in Wawa by ambulance. Mr. KURT died later that evening in hospital as a result of his injuries.

A Post Mortem has been scheduled for Monday 24 Sep 07 in Sault Ste Marie to determine the cause of death. Superior East OPP are continuing their investigation with the assistance of a Technical Traffic Collision Investigators.

Two Vehicle Fatal Collision

On Saturday September 22, 2007 at approximately 8:40 pm members of the Sudbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a two vehicle fatal motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 17 and Long Lake Road. Preliminary indications are that a southbound vehicle traveling on Long Lake Road entered the intersection and was struck by a pick up truck that was traveling eastbound on Highway 17. The driver of the eastbound pick up truck and the passenger of the southbound car died as a result of the collision. The driver of the car sustained non life threatening injuries. Names of the involved persons are not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.

The investigation is ongoing involving Sudbury OPP members and Technical Traffic Collision Investigators. The intersection has been completely closed off to motorists and is expected to remain closed until approximately 9:00 am on Sunday September 23, 2007. Collision investigators have to complete their work and repairs to the Highway 17 traffic lights must also be completed.

Alternate routes around the collision location including Regional Road 55, Southview drive and Regent street should be used by motorists until further notice.
