CHAPLEAU YOUTH CHARGED FOR UNLAWFUL POSSESION OF FIREARM

(CHAPLEAU, ON) – On Friday September 21, 2012 officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Chapleau Detachment conducted a traffic stop for speeding on Highway 129 in Chapleau Township. During the stop OPP officers observed a gun case in the rear seat area of the vehicle. The driver, a 17-year-old male youth advised he was transporting the firearm, a Savage 30-06 bolt action rifle, for someone else. The driver did not possess a valid Possession Acquisition License.

The firearm and ammunition were seized by police and the accused was placed under arrest. The youth stands charged with Unlawfully Possessing a Firearm and is scheduled to appear in Chapleau Youth Criminal Court on November 14, 2012.

SUSPENDED DRIVER STOPPED AND VEHICLE TOWED

(WHITE RIVER, ON) – On Sunday September 23, 2012 the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) White River Detachment conducted a routine traffic stop on Highway 17 in Hunt Township. The vehicle, a 2012 Acura MDX bearing a temporary Saskatchewan marker was stopped for speeding. The driver, Brian FINUCAN 36 years of age of Carlisle, Ontario produced a valid Ontario driver’s license. Further investigation revealed that FINUCAN’s driver’s licence was suspended on March 23, 2012 for unpaid fines and again on April 25, 2012 for demerit points.

The vehicle was seized for the required 7 days for the demerit points suspension. The accused was issued a Summons for Driving while Suspended and a Provincial Offences Notice for speeding. The accused is scheduled to appear in Wawa Provincial Court on November 14, 2012.

TRAFFIC STOP RESULTS IN DRUG SEIZURE

(WHITE RIVER, ON) – On Sunday September 23, 2012 officer from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) White River Detachment were conducting stationary radar on Highway 17 in Hunt Township. A 1988 Honda Prelude bearing an Alberta marker was stopped for a Highway Traffic Act violation. Further investigation revealed that the marker did not match the vehicle. While speaking with the driver, OPP officers observed drug paraphernalia on the dashboard of the vehicle. It was turned over to police by the driver and marihuana residue was found inside.

The driver, 34-year-old Dwayne ZWICKER of Calgary, Alberta was placed under arrest for possession of marihuana. A search of the vehicle resulted in further seizure of 39 individually wrapped tin foil packages each containing approximately 1 gram of marihuana.

As a result the accused was charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking and he is to appear in Wawa Criminal Court on November 19, 2012 to answer to this charge.


Domestic dispute

Male arrested and charged

BATCHEWANA FIRST NATION , ON – On Sunday, September 23, 2012, at 9:50 a.m., OPP responded to a domestic dispute on the Batchewana First Nation.

A 41-year-old male and his spouse were engaged in a verbal argument when the male allegedly struck the 35-year-old female victim several times on her body, face and head before dragging her up and down a set of stairs by her hair.

The accused then allegedly proceeded to choke the victim, threw her out a patio door and then threw a glass bowl at her. 

He then dragged her back into the residence striking her numerous times in the head and face.

The assault was witnessed by several children in the residence.

The victim was transported to Sault Area Hospital by ambulance with serious facial injuries and was admitted to hospital.

The 41-year-old year old male was arrested and charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm and one count of assault with a weapon contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused is being held in custody pending a bail hearing today at 10 a.m. in Sault Ste. Marie Provincial Court.
