A single-vehicle crash on Highway 17B Thursday morning has led to charges against a Sault driver.

Shortly after 9 a.m., officers with the Sault detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police with the help of Batchewana First Nation Police Service responded to the crash, which happened between Anishinawbe Point Road (Garden River First Nation) and Church Street, within McDonald-Meredith-Aberdeen Additional Township.

Police say the car was eastbound on Highway 17B when it veered off the roadway onto the right shoulder, over-corrected and crossed both lanes before entering the bush on the north side of the highway and colliding with an embankment.

The driver was arrested and arrangements were made for a drug recognition expert from the Sault Ste Marie Police Service to meet at the OPP detachment to assist with further testing.

As a result, Cassandra Pinnell, 29, was charged with:

  • operation while impaired-alcohol and drugs
  • fail to surrender permit for vehicle

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste Marie on Aug.12 and was issued a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension while the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Pinnell is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
