MANITOULIN MAN FURTHER REMANDED IN CUSTODY

(Zhiibaahaasing First Nation, Manitoulin Island, Ont.) – Members of the United Chiefs and Council of Manitoulin Anishnaabe Police Service, the Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police and the OPP Northeast Region Crime Unit, are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman whose body was found at a Zhiibaahaasing First Nation residence on Manitoulin Island early Sunday morning on the 27th November 2005. Upon arriving at the residence the female occupant was found deceased. She has been identified as 25-year-old Mary Ann Davis, of 304 Sagon Road, Zhiibaahaasing First Nation cause of death was determined to be from a gun shot wound. Her common law spouse Brent Jeremy KELLS age 21 of 304 Sagon Road, Zhibaahaasing First Nation has been charged with First Degree Murder.

Mr. Kells appeared in Gore Bay Ontario Court of Justice on Monday the 30th January 2006. He was further remanded in custody until Monday 13th February 2006 for his next court appearance so his defense lawyer can obtain disclosure.

The investigating officer is Senior Constable Brian Ziegler of the U.C.C.M. Anishnaabe Police Service and is being conducted under the direction of Detective Inspector Larry Reesor, Criminal Investigation Branch, OPP General Headquarters, Orillia.

Divers Temporarily End Search/Recovery For Missing Field Residentz

(North Bay, ON) – North Bay OPP Snow Machine/Marine Unit and the OPP Under Water Search and Recovery Unit (U.S.R.U.) have temporarily stopped their search/recovery for 18 year old Daniel Jarbeau of Field, Ontario.
On Sunday January 22nd, 2006, Jarbeau went missing after the snow machine he was a passenger on, entered open waters of the French River. Over the past eight (8) days, since the mishap, OPP Divers have thoroughly searched for Jarbeau in an area off Hunt Island in the French River even though the weather, ice and water conditions have been unpredictable. At this time, U.S.R.U. Divers have not located Jarbeau and have decided to stop the search for now. They will reconvene the recovery when environmental conditions improve.
The OPP Helicopter will periodically fly over the French River to check for open water and an opportunity for divers to search again.

BAYSAR (North Bay Air Search and Rescue) volunteers have also been given global positioning coordinates of the search area and are willing to assist. They already have a had aircraft in the area searching over the French River checking for open water. The organization will continue to check this area periodically.

The North Bay OPP caution ice fishermen and snow machine operators to utilize extreme caution in the French River because of the unpredictable ice and water conditions. ‘If You Don’t Know, Don’t Go!’


MISCHIEF TO CANADA POST BUILDING

(Desbarats, Ontario) On Saturday January 28, 2006 at approximately 9:00 am the East Algoma – Thessalon OPP were advised of a mischief that occurred overnight at the Canada Post Office located in Desbarats, Ontario.

The exterior door leading to the lobby had an 18” hole in it through the wire mesh glass. There was no entry gained to the main section of the Post Office.

WANTED HEYDEN MAN LOCATED

Heyden, Ont., On Friday afternoon Sault Ste Marie OPP arrested a man they have been looking for since January 11, 2006.

On Friday at about 1:00 p.m. officers were called to a home in Rupert Acres Trailer Park after receiving a report of a fight between two men over the visitation and custody of children. Officers arrived at the home on Rupert Acres Drive to find both combatants still in the house. As officers entered the home one of the two fighters told officers that a man wanted by Sault Ste Marie OPP was hiding in one of the bedrooms.

Officers located twenty nine year old Patrick Woodcox, of Heyden, hiding in the bedroom. Mr. Woodcox was wanted for four break and enters in the Maki Lake and Birchgrove Road area from this past fall. It turns out that Mr. Woodcox had been banned from entering the Rupert Acres Trailer Park. When he was arrested he had a small amount of Marijuana on him. He was also charged with Trespassing contrary to the Trespass to Property Act and Possession of a Narcotic. Mr. Woodcox will appear in bail court on Monday morning. The second person that is also wanted for break and enters in the Maki Lake area still has not been located. Forty one year old Darrin Phillips of Heyden is wanted for six break and enters.

Over the past two weeks police have received several reported sightings of both Mr. Woodcox and Mr. Phillips. If anyone knows where Mr. Phillips is hiding, a call to the OPP or Crime Stoppers will help take an alleged thief out of your neighbourhood.

CRIMINAL CHARGES AS A RESULT OF A CHILD CUSTODY BATTLE

Heyden, Ont One man faces charges after a Friday afternoon fight over children and what appeared to be in the best interest of the youngsters.

At about 1:00 p.m. a Sault Ste Marie man arrived at a home on Rupert Acres Drive in Heyden. A disagreement ensued between the man and the three occupants of the home. It appeared that there was a difference of opinion on who should be allowed in the home and the moral values of some of the occupants.

The Sault Ste Marie man was told to leave the home and he refused to leave. This verbal disagreement quickly escalated into physical violence. As a result of this investigation fifty five year old Anthony MORRISON of 18 Root River Trailer Park, in Sault Ste Marie, has been charged with assault and threatening contrary to the Criminal Code.

Police are still investigating this incident and further charges may be laid against other occupants of the home.
