CAR vs. MOOSE FATAL COLLISION - Highway 144

(Sudbury, ON) - At 9:10 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008, members of the Sudbury OPP Detachment responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a car and a moose, on Highway 144, City of Greater Sudbury (5 kms north of Regional Road 24 to Lively).

Investigation reveals that a southbound Pontiac Grand Am collided head-on with a moose. The moose crashed through the windshield and roof of the car. The driver subsequently lost control of the vehicle and came to rest in a swamp. Both occupants were taken to St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Sudbury. The male driver suffered non-life threatening injuries. The female passenger suffered life threatening injuries and succumbed to her injuries earlier this morning.

No names are being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.

An OPP Collision Reconstructionists attended the scene to assist with the investigation. Officers had to close one lane of traffic while they investigated.

The investigation is continuing.

UPDATE - FATAL COLLISION - Highway 17

(Sudbury, ON) - At 1:50 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008, members of the Sudbury OPP Detachment responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 17, City of Greater Sudbury (1 km west of Long Lake Road).

Investigation reveals that for unknown reasons, an eastbound Chevrolet Impala car crossed the centre line, on a straight section of roadway and collided head-on with a westbound five (5) ton flatbed truck.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. He is identified as Richard LAROCQUE, age 48, of Sudbury. The driver of the truck, Raymond BREAU, age 52, from Copper Cliff, suffered minor injuries and was released at the scene by Paramedics.

Two OPP Collision Reconstructionists attended the scene to assist with the investigation. The highway was closed in both directions for approximately five hours while officers investigated. A detour of the scene was set up for east and west bound traffic through the city and Regional Road 55.

The investigation is continuing.

MISSING MAN LOCATED

(Espanola, ON) – Earlier today (April 23rd, 2008), the body of Mr. Christopher GREENMAN, age 36, was found by a local resident in the bush just outside of Espanola.

Mr. Greenman was reported missing to Grey County OPP on Sunday, April 13th, 2008. He was last seen walking in the Town of Espanola on Saturday, April 12th, 2008 at approximately 6:30 a.m. and his last contact with family was at 3:00 p.m. that afternoon.

The OPP helicopter conducted an air search of the Espanola area on April 16th, 2008. The following day, an OPP Emergency Response Team and Canine Unit conducted a ground search of the Spanish River banks along with the OPP Marine Unit who searched the waterways of the Spanish River.

Foul play is not suspected at this time. The investigation is continuing and a post mortem is scheduled for tomorrow.

Police Continue to Charge Drivers with Excessive Speeds:

Members of Superior East O.P.P. continue to actively patrolling area roadways to ensure that our roads remain safe. Detachment members look for aggressive drivers and those that continue to disregards the speed limits on our highways.

On the 22nd of April 2008 at approx. 9:20 a.m. two drivers were found on Hwy #17 in Dambrossio Twp. driving in excess of 50 km/hr over the posted limit.

Is charged with: Race a Motor Vehicle on a Highway - Speeding 152 km/hr in a posted 90km/hr zone. He will appear in court on the 17th of June 2008

Mahamatt ABAKAR (age19)
Of Bold St. Hamilton Ontario
Is charged with: Race a Motor Vehicle on a Highway Speeding - 163 km/hr in a posted 90km/hr zone. He will appear in court on the 17th of June 2008

Those people that are charged under Sec 172 of the Highway Traffic Act. with driving at a rate of speed that is at 50 km/hr or more over the posted speed limit will have:

• Their licence immediately suspended for seven days.
• The vehicle will be impounded immediately for seven days. (Even if the driver is not the owner or the vehicle is rented or borrowed)
• The driver is responsible for the towing and storage costs.
• Those convicted of Sec 172 of Highway Traffic Act are liable to a fine of not less than $2,000.00, the possibility of a jail sentence of not more than six months as well a driver’s licence suspension.

Section 172 of the Highway Traffic Act states that no person shall drive a motor vehicle on a highway in a race or contest, while performing a stunt or on a bet or wager:


What is a Stunt? :A Stunt is defined as any activity where one or more persons engage in any type of the following behaviour:

• Intentionally lifting some of the vehicles tires from the surface of the highway.
• Intentionally causing tires to lose traction with the highway while turning (commonly known as spinning, sliding or drifting).
• Intentionally causing a vehicle to circle.
• Driving two or more vehicles side by side where one vehicle occupies a live lane of the highway and has no intention of passing the other.
• Driving with someone in the trunk.
• Driving where the driver is not occupying the driver’s seat (sitting on the seat back or standing in vehicles with open sunroofs or convertibles).
• Driving that may endanger others by stopping or slowing, preventing other vehicles from passing, driving too closely to another vehicle, pedestrian or object.
• Driving a motor vehicle at a rate of speed that is 50 km/hr or more over the posted speed limit.
