2 Vehicle Accident Shortly before 2:00 P.M. yesterday 10 Aug 2005 a two-vehicle accident in front of the Voyageur Restaurant in Batchewana sent three people to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Shortly before 2:00 P.M. yesterday 10 Aug 2005 a two-vehicle accident in front of the Voyageur Restaurant in Batchewana sent three people to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Batchewana is approximately 60 km north of Sault Ste. Marie.
A southbound pick-up truck was stopped on Highway 17, waiting to make a left turn into the restaurant when it was struck by a southbound SUV. Three persons were transported to Sault Area Hospital with injuries deemed not to be life threatening.
This accident is still under investigation and charges are pending.

Break and Enter

(Thessalon, Ontario) On August 11, 2005 shortly after midnight a break and enter was reported to the East Algoma – Thessalon OPP. The break and enter occurred east of Thessalon, Ontario on Highway 17 at a local business.

Cash, cigarettes and candy were stolen in the break and enter. The dollar amount is not known at this time.

Single Motor Vehicle Collision

(Desbarats, Ontario) On August 10, 2005 shortly after 11:00 am the East Algoma – Thessalon OPP were advised of a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 east of Desbarats, Ontario near Gordon Lake Road. A tractor-trailer that was traveling eastbound entered onto the eastbound shoulder, striking a rock cut.

The driver of the tractor-trailer Ray LAPOINTE (61) of Sudbury, Ontario suffered serious injuries. LAPOINTE received head and chest injuries and was transported to the Sault Area Hospital by Ambulance. LAPOINTE remains in hospital.

The tractor-trailer was damaged extensively and was towed from the scene.

A Technical Traffic Collision Investigator (TTCI) from the East Algoma OPP, a Collision Reconstructionist from the North Bay OPP, a Forensic Identification Officer from the Sault OPP along with members of the East Algoma – Thessalon OPP remained on the scene until approximately 9:30 pm.

The highway was closed for approximately 20 minutes after the collision. The collision occurred at a location where there was one eastbound lane and two westbound lanes (one passing lane). Traffic was reduced to one eastbound lane and one westbound lane for the remainder of the day until 9:30 pm when all three lanes were opened.

The weather was sunny and clear and the highway was dry at the time of the collision.

The investigation remains under investigation.
