On January 10, 2014 at 2:25 a.m. an officer from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment was monitoring traffic on Causley Street in Blind River.

The officer observed a male approaching from the rear to the driver’s window with a weapon in his hand.  The officer reversed the cruiser from the immediate area for safety then after a short altercation the male was arrested without further incident.  The accused made further threats to harm police.

As a result 32-year-old John Martin Recollet of Blind River is charged with the following criminal offences:

1) Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, section 88 of the Criminal Code
2) Uttering a threat (2 counts), section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code

He is being held for a bail hearing in Sault Ste Marie at a later date.

Theft of Laptop Investigated

On January 15, 2014, officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Chapleau Detachment were advised of a theft of a laptop computer from a business on Birch Street in Chapleau. Police were advised that the theft took place sometime between Thursday, January 9 and Friday, January 10, 2014. It is described as a black Acer Aspire E and is valued at $1200.

Male Charged with Theft of Lottery Tickets

On January 13, 2014 at 9:00 p.m. officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Chapleau Detachment were advised of a theft from a local store.  Police were advised that a number of lottery scratch tickets were stolen, valued at $130.

As a result of witness information and police investigation one male was arrested at 10:20 p.m.  Terence Saunders, 32, of Chapleau stands charged with Theft Under $5,000.  He is scheduled to appear at Ontario Court of Justice in Chapleau on March 19, 2014.

Early Morning Vehicle Check Leads to Arrests

Two Stolen Vehicles Recovered

On Thursday January 16, 2014 at 2:55 a.m. Manitoulin OPP was on routine patrol in the early morning hours when officers observed a vehicle doing circles in the parking lot of the Little Current Recreational Complex in Little Current. Upon checking out the vehicle and occupants officers learned that the driver did not have a driver’s licence and the vehicle was alleged to be stolen. Further investigation revealed that another vehicle had been stolen from another community then driven to Little Current abandoned and this other vehicle taken.

Upon checking the second stolen vehicle a quantity of controlled substances were located and seized. As a result of this investigation OPP have charged three people two males and one female with the following offenses.

  • Theft of a Motor Vehicle contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Possession of Stolen Property over $5000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act
  • Breach of Probation (only one male) contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

All three subjects were charged and released on a Promise to Appear an Undertaking with conditions to appear at Gore Bay Provincial Court to answer to the charges.
